Prejudice in Canada Strongest
Among Workers, Seminar Shows

MONTIEAL (JTA.) — Racial
and religious prejudice is more
common and stronger among
members of the working class
in Canada than among any
other economic groups in the
country. it was established
here at the conclusion of a
two-week seminar sponsored
by the Canadian Conference
of Christians and Jews.
Participants in the seminar
also established that children
of college-educated parents are
less likely to develop prejudice
than children whose parents
received only high school edu-
cation.
Prejudice is less common in
"cosmopolitan" Canadian
a
center such as Montreal, where
there are many residents of
various ethnic origins, than in
homogenous centers such as
Quebec City or Toronto.
The presence of population
elements of different cultural
background in Canada, the
Seminar found, has developed
a form of tolerance and a
modus vivendi which has re-
sulted in the diminution of
obvious discrimination or pre-
judice patterns. It has not
resulted in the disappearance
of prejudice.
There is a notably greater
readiness to "live and let live"
culturally in Canada than in
the United States, the Seminar
conclusions said. The melting
pot principle which is widely
accepted in the United States
has fewer followers in Canada
because plural culture is ac-
cepted here as a constitutional
fact and as a social ideal, the
students at the Seminar found.

WHERE You Save

Gromyko for Peace,
But Continues His
Sniping at Israel.

UNITED NATIONS (AJP)-
Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei
A. Gromyko, smiling and in an
unusually friendly mood, told
the American Jewish Press cor-
respondent in an exclusive in-
terview following his special
press conference on Friday that
the Soviet Union "would wel-
come a peace consummation"
between Israel and the Arab
states.
"Now that the Arab states
have gotten together and ac-
cepted a joint resolution for
peace among themselves," the
AJP reporter asked • Gromyko,
"would you favor a final settle-
ment between Israel and these
Arab states?"
"We would welcome such a
consummation," Gromyko re-
plied. "It would be fine if all
the troubles in the Middle East
could be solved."
The Soviet foreign minister
then intimated that this could
be done if the resolutions of the
General Assembly were imple-
mented and if Britain and
France were "soberly" inter-
ested.
The AJP reporter reminded
Gromyko of the very important
part he had played at the UN
in 1947 toward the creation of
the state of Israel. At this he
appeared noticeably moved. "If
Israel would only behave," he
complained, all would be well.
The AJP correspondent coun-
tered: "But, Mr. Gromyko, there

are two sides to every story,"
