Sun's Energy Being
Domesticated for
Work in Arid Israel

Much progress in Israel's
march in the harnessing of the
sun, for heating, power and
cooling purposes, is reported by
Lucian 0. Meysels, a member
of the Hebrew University staff,
currently in the United States
engaged in Semitic studies at
the University of Wisconsin.
One of the great obstacles
in the development of Israel
has been its shortage of natural
power. But with recent break-
throughs in the development
of solar energy, this problem
nears solution.
Israel National Physical Lab-
oratory, which has been the
forerunner in this research is
moving to the Hebrew Univer-
sity campus to become the
nucleus of a proposed depart-
ment of applied physics at the
university.
Dr. Harry Zvi Tabor, London-
born director of the physical
laboratory, was himself respon-
sible for one of the greatest
advances in the development of
means of harnessing the sun's
rays. His selective service coat-
ing for metals produces a

Tel Aviv Grocerymen Protest Supermarkets

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Food
retailers went on a half-day sit-
down strike here and closed
their stores in protest against
the imminent opening of a fam-
iliar signpost on the American
economic scene, the super-
market. They claim that the
introduction of supermarkets
will put 10,000 grocers, vege-
table dealers, butchers and fish-

mongers out of business.
The first of 20 American-style
supermarkets is scheduled to
open here early next month.
The $500,000 behemoth, hither-
to unknown in this land of small
shopkeepers, is viewed with des-
pair by retailers. On the other
hand, the government hopes to
find in it a device for cutting
the cost of living.
