Marriage of Youth and Orthodoxy Holy Day Plans

Whither goest Orthodoxy?
This has been a question
that has caused even the most
traditionally-minded Jews to
reflect on the growing trend
toward abandonment of certain
orthodox practices.
Yet, amid this background,
there are many young Jews
who will tell anyone who will
listen that traditionalism is far
removed from extinction in
America.
The most noticeable demon-
stration of this fact took place
last week at an election meet-
ing of Young Israel Center of
Oak-Woods, when a group of
young men took over the reins
of the congregation.

Elected to the presidency
was Jack Ginsburg, at 28 prob-
ably the youngest man ever
to be chosen president of a
syna gogue which represents
200 member families, and,
almost certainly, the youngest
synagogue president ever
elected in the Detroit area.
Ernest Citron, the congrega-
tion's secretary and chairman
of the board, is only 31, and
Rabbi Yaakov I. Homnick,
spiritual leader of Young Israel
of Oak-Woods, also is 31.
The youth movement also is
reflected in the election of Dr.
Meyer Green and Morris Gol-
denberg, as vice-presidents,
Seymour Ribiat as treasurer
and Dr. Eli Brown, Jerome
Kelman and Benjamin Assik
as board members.
While most Orthodox congre-
gations are composed of the
older element of the com-
munity, Young Israel Center of

The board announcement
also called attention to the
fact that the center of activi-
ties is now shifting to the area
where the new synagogue is
under construction, on 10 Mile
Rd., in Oak Park.
Rabbi Lehrman will alternate
with Rabbi Emanuel Apple-
baum, who will conduct serv-
ices at the Dexter sanctuary on

The rabbis will be assisted

Cantor Jacob Blecharowicz,

Cantor Blecharowicz has a
lyric tenor voice.
Admission cards to the serv-
ices are available from Eliot
