tained by the American
Women's League for Israel,
denied that Orthodox pres-
sure was responsible for re-

the center's auditorium.
The small Reform group,
which has been holding Fri-

rium, was notified several
weeks ago that it could not
hold High Holy Day services
there. The management ex-
plained that introduction of
Torah Scrolls and other rit-

Day services would interfere
with the "basically secular"
nature 'of the center. The
management said it 7 -tad
promised to permit use of
the auditorium for Friday
services after the High Holy
Days.
The Reform congregation,
after numerous refusals from
hall owners who admitted
privately they -feared OrthO-

aged to obtain a small hall
for the High Holy Day serv-
ices.

Bills. Aimed At Curbing
Synagogue Bombings To Be
Carried Over In Congress
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — An
attempt will be made during the
Congressional recess to prepare
hearings for next session on sev-
eral• pending measures to curb
dynamiting of synagogues and
other institutions in the South.
Sen. John F. Kennedy, Massa-
chusetts Democrat, introduced
a bill on the last day of Con-
gress prohibiting the transpor-
tation and use of explosives for
illegal purposes. His bill would
enable the Federal Government
to investigate when a bombing
occurs. The FBI previously held
that it lacked legal jurisdiction.
Justice Department sources
indicated that the Department
does not really desire new legis-
lation that would involve the
FBI in religious and racial
bombing s. The Department
holds it should be a matter for
local police authorities.

Rabbi's Son to Preach at Beth Abraham

The - Shofar is blown daily in
the synagogue during the entire
Hebrew month of Elul.
Both a historical reason as
well as an ethical explanation
is given for this practice. His-
torically, it is recalled that it
was on the first of Elul that
Moses went up on Mount Sinai
for the second time. His suc-
cess in this venture was to de-
termine whether or not the peo-
ple had finally been forgiven
for the sin of the Golden Calf.
When he went up, the Shofar
was sounded. Some claim that
the Shofar was sounded daily
until he came back down the
mountain with the second set of
tablets. Hence, the Shofar is
sounded in every synagogue
beginning with the first of Elul.
Ethically, it is claimed that the
Shofar is a call to the people
to repent before the New Year
and its judgment comes. The
Shofar is blown 30 days before
to give the customary 30-day
time for the borrower to pay up
his debt, in the sense that every
sinner is a debtor before the
Almighty and has a chance to
pay up before the • deadline,
hoping that the judge will not
foreclose on him. Furthermore,
the days of the month of Elul
used to be fast days and it was
always traditional to blow the
Shofar on a public fast day , to
bring the people into a penitent
mood.

The Jewish News calls at-
tention to an error in a recent
announcement of High Holiday

gogue was erroneously said to
be located at W. 7 Mile and
Greenfield, instead of its cor-
rect location at W. 7 Mile and
