the Navy's "snub" last week be the scene of a luncheon and
in not inviting him to a cere- pantomime recital, to be given
mony honoring the sub-polar by the Detroit Israel Bond
trip of the atomic-powered sub-
marine, Nautilus. Rickover is
known as "the father of the
atomic submarine" and was
largely responsible for its con-
struction.
Congressional leaders had de-
manded the apology after re-
jecting administration excuses
that there just wasn't enough
room for Rickover. Congress-
men also pressed the Navy for
the promotion of Rickover,
since he would be forced to
retire within a year if a pro-
motion is not forthcoming. It
is charged that intra-service ani-
mosity has so far prevented
Adm. Rickover's promotion.

Philadelphia Public School Bible Reading Tried in Test Case

PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — A
special three-man court, sitting
in the United States District
Court here has begun hearing
evidence in an action directed
against the constitutionality of
a school code requirement that
ten verses of the King James
Bible be read in school every
day. T h e composition of the
court will permit the case to
be speeded to the United States
Supreme Court.
The action was brought by
Mr. and Mrs. Edward L.
Schempp, of Roslyn, members of
the Unitarian Church, and is
being fought by the Abington
Township School Board and the
Philadelphia Board of Educa-
tion. The Schempps charged
that the Bible-reading regula-
tion violates the First and Four-
teenth Amendments to the Con-
stitution.
Dr. Solomon Grayzel, editor
of the Jewish Publication So-
ciety, who was called as an
expert witness by the plaintiffs,
told the court that Bible-read-

NEW YORK (JTA) — Soviet
Foreign Minister Andrei Gro-
myko was asked by Adolph
Held, national chairman, and
Nathan Chanin, chairman of the
administrative committee of the
Jewish Labor Committee,
whether continued repression
of Jewish cultural institutions
and personalities in the Soviet
Union is "further appeasement
of the Nasser clique in the Arab
world."
The JLC wired the Soviet
Foreign Minister that it "wel-
comes your visit to the United
Nations as a splendid opportu-
nity to receive your country's
reply to our consistent 10-year
demand to learn the fate of
Jewish cultural institutions and
leaders in the Soviet Union."

Knesset Eases Income Tax
Law Before Recessment

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The
Israel Parliament recessed for a
summer vacation and the High
Holidays after Speaker Joseph
Sprinzak voiced a fervent ap-
peal for world peace and for
peace between Israel and her
neighbors.
One of the Knesset's last of-
ficial acts before the recess was
the adoption of amendments to
the income tax law which give
businessmen the right to deduct
from tax returns losses incurred
in previous years. The deduc-
tions may be made even if the
taxpayer suffered the losses in
a business other than the one
in which he is currently en-
gaged.
