Vermont Newspaper
Decries Sen. Flanders
for Attacks on Israel

ST. ALBANS. Vt., (JTA) —
Senator Ralph E. Flanders, Ver-
mont Republican, who has made
it his habit recently to attack
Israel in the Senate, was de-
nounced by the Daily Messenger,
the newspaper serving this Ver-
mont community, for his anti-
Israel outbursts. The editorial,
which was signed by the pub-
lisher of the newspaper. said:
"It would be interesting to
know for what Senator Flanders
is the spokesman. Then we
would know who is setting up
Senator Flanders to make his
recent dangerous statements to
the effect that the State of
Israel is the cause of the trouble
in the Near East. Nothing could
be further from the truth."
The newspaper defended
Israel and expressed regret that
"President Eisenhower made one
of. the greatest mistakes in the
history of this country" by in-
tervening against Israeli-British-
French forces at the time of
the Sinai-Suez war.
"The one last block to abso-
lue Communist control in the
Near East is the State of Israel,"
the paper pointed out. "There-
fore, it would be interesting to
know what forces in this coun-
try put Senator Flanders up to
this ill-advised and most un-
forturiate" attack on Israel. "If
we knew what forces they were
we could take steps now to coun-
teract them," the newspaper
said, "and • this must be done at
an early date."

art full, then thou shalt bless
the Lord thy God for the good
land which he bath given thee.

Pass New Bill to Ease
Immigration Requirements

WASHINGTON (JTA)—Pres-
ident Eisenhower has b e f ore
him a bill passed by the Senate
allowing aliens who entered the
United States as students or on
visitors visas to change their
status to regular immigrants
without going through the tra-
ditional formality of leaving the
country and re-entering on im-
migrants visas secured in one
of the countries neighboring the
United States.
In the fiscal year that ended
June 30, more than 7,000 aliens
had to meet the requirements
for a change of status by going
to Canada, picking up a visa and
coming right back.

the White Paper stated.
(High officials of the Brown
and Williamson Tobacco Com-
pany, when contacted by the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency at
the company's headquarters in
Louisville, Ky., said they had no
comment on the charges of the
Jewish War Veterans.)

Sinai Hospital has broken ground, at the corner of Whit-
. comb and West McNichols Road, for the construction of the
- Harry and Katy Slatkin Residence for Nurses. This addition
to Sinai Hospital, made possible by a contribution from the
Slatkin family, will provide attractive housing for nurses and
other professional women employees.
The building, designed by Norman J. Levey, will contain a
total of 24 apartments with kitchenettes. It will provide living
accommodations for 30 to 36 employees, who up to now could
not work at the hospital because of transportation or housing
problems.
The general contract for the building has been awarded
to the A. J. Etkin Construction Co.

pany and its American subsidi-
ary, the Brown Williamson To-
bacco Company, were accused at
the 63rd annual convention of
the Jewish War Veterans of the
U.S. of yielding to Arab pres-
sure to boycott the State of
Israel.
in a "White Paper" submitted
to the convention, the foreign
affairs committee of the Jewish
veterans organization empha-
sized that the British-American
Tobacco Company remains one
of the few major corporations
in international trade which has
admittedly changed its trade
policies as a result of Arab pres-
sures to boycott Israel.
In describing the JWV inves-
tigation of the policies of the
British-American Tobacco Com-
pany, the White Paper said that
the company "attempted to cre-
ate a smokescreen to conceal its
motives in cutting off trade with
Israel. Such cowardice and de-
ceit in international. trade
should be exposed and every
effort should be made to pre-
vent their companies from ap-
peasing t h o s e A r a b nations
which seek to permeate their
medieval trade practices
throughout the world. While
many firms and governments
throughout the world have re-
sisted Arab approaches to boy-
cott Israel and knuckle under to
the Arab intimidations and
threats, some companies, among
them the British-American To-
bacco Company, have capitu-
lated to such pressures."
The White Paper offered the
following conclusions after a
two-year investigation of the
operations of the Company and
its American subsidiaries: 1.
