Hadassah approaches the Sept.
9 kickoff date for its Honor Roll
Campaign with a recently-
received commendation from
Israeli Minister of Education,
Zalman Aranne. Detroit Chapter
president, Mrs. David J. Schach-
ter, announced that Aranne had
praised the Hadassah Youth
Aliyah program by stating: "In
the sphere of education in this
country, many valuable insti-
tutions have been established,
but among these, I believe
Youth Aliyah stands out. Youth
Aliyah has founded children's
villages, youth groups and other
education institutions. Thou-
sands of boys and girls have
found a new way to the future,
combining the ideals of the in-
dividual and the community."
Since 1934, when Youth
Aliyah rescued the first small
group of children from Hitler's
Germany, 85,000 children from
72 lands have been thus rescued
and rehabilitated. The new ar-
rivals are sent to children's vil-
lages, cooperatives, and in the
case of physically or mentally
handicapped children, to special
institutions where they receive
individualized care. Hadassah's
youth work also revolves around
a vocational educational pro-
gram, designed scientifically to
train the youth to take their
places in Israel's expanding ec-
onomy, in such fields as agro-
mechanics, poultry raising, hotel
training, designing and repair-
ing industrial and scientific
equipment, printing and typog-
raphy, dress designing, secre-
tarial studies and dental and
laboratory assistants.
In addition to the 240 Youth
Aliyah villages, agricultural
settlements and institutions in
Israel which Hadassah supports,
another achievement has been
the establishment of the fourth
Anne Frank Haven within a
period of three months.
Mrs. Daniel Siegel, chairman
of Hadassah "Imas," advises that
contributors of $600, the sum
required to provide for all ex-
penses for a child for one year,
will be designated an Ima
