Louis Golding, noted British
novelist who acquired fame with
his novel "Magnolia Street"
more than 25 years ago, died
in a London,
England hos-
pital, Aug. 9,
at the age of
62. The city of
his birth, Man-
chester, w a s
the back-
ground for
most of his
novels, includ-
ing "Day of
Atonement," Golding
"Forward from Babylon," "The
Five Silver Sisters" and others.
He was married two years ago
to Mrs. Annie Wintrobe, who
inspired one of his leading char-
acters a quarter of a century
ago.
Last December, Golding was
one of the guest lecturers here
during the Jewish Community
Center's annual Book Fair.
Shortly before his illness he
was working on a history of the
Jewish people. He was a fre-
quest visitor to Israel.
About British J e w r y, he
wrote: "We English Jews be-
long to the Jewish race, not the
Anglo-Saxon race, but we be-
long to the polity of English-
men, and our fathers, brothers
and sons have died for England
without making any more fuss
about it than a Mayfair Duke
or a Dorset peasant."

JNF Director Marks
50th Year in Israel

JERUSALEM—Joseph Weitz,
head of the land and develop-
ment department of the Jewish
National Fund and a member
of the Fund's board of directors,
recently celebrated the 50th an-
niversary of his aliyah.
.
Weitz, an agronomist and ex-
pert on fruit plantations, has
been the driving force behind
land acquisition by the JNF,
and its reclamation and afforest-
ation work, and, over a period
of many years, one of the chief
planners of settlement activity.

Social Secretary
Criticizes Choice
ofWeddingMusic

Editor, The Jewish News:
For many years, since I have
been acting as a social secre-
tary, I have been distressed by
the lack of good taste displayed
at some Jewish weddings, and
I have wanted to ask whether
through your columns you
would not do a service for the
Jewish community by calling at-
tention to these questionable
displays.
I am sure that most of these
cases are the result of a lack
of knowledge of what is fitting
and 'proper in the situation.
Feeling that mine would be
a "voice in the wilderness," I
have refrained from comment-
ing, but, happily, in the Free
Press (Saturday, Aug. 2), I
came upon an item on the sub-
ject of wedding music and the
good judgment involved in its
selection, written by Mr. Adrian

(Mr. Fuller's article. in brief,
deals with the popular choice of
Wagner and Mendelssohn as tra-
ditional wedding pieces, and
makes the comment that the
two composers are for the thea-
ter and not for religious cerel
monies. It adds that "wedding
music, like all other worship
service music (should be) per-
formed to the greater glory of
God and not to the honor of a
pagan love)."
I would point out only that
for rabbis to permit the bride
and bridegroom to be "led to
the chuppah" to the strains
from the Wedding Song from
Lohengrin; for them to conclude
the Jewish religious service
with the Priestly Benediction
and the traditional breaking of
the glass by the young man as
a symbol of the link in the chain
of Jewish belongingness; and
then, to permit the couple to
be ushered out to the strains
of the Wedding March from
Mendelssohn's "M i d s u m m e r
Niglot's Dream" is somehow not
consistent with a Jewish reli-
gious service.
When one adds to the wrong
,selection of musical numbers
the manner of their rendition—
usually in a dance or military
march tempo—as a background
for a RELIGIOUS RITUAL, one
senses an anachronism! Music
in a dance tempo—and of a
secular character — should fol-

The Free Press' Error:
Facts on ME Issues

Editor, The Jewish News:
Recent articles and editorial
opinions in daily newspapers
display a shocking lack of un-
derstanding of the pr es en t
world conditions and the Middle
East problems.
A recent Free Press editorial
on the Mid-East situation leaves
me gasping with its inability to
reason straight. The editorial in
last Saturday's paper is headed
"Strict Neutrality Can Work
Both Ways."
The editorial writer is piqued
by Israel's stoppage of the use
of her air-space by British and
American troopships. The- Free
Press accuses Israel of "trying
to ride two horses at the same
time." The editorial then con-
cludes that "Great Britain and
the United States may hence-
forth be disinterested when Is-
rael gets into trouble. Israel's
sudden avowaj, of neutrality
frees us and the British at least
to some degree from the heavy
responsibility carried so long on
.Israel's behalf."
What I would like to know
is—just what responsibility has
either of these governments had
on Israel's behalf? Statehood
was not given Israel on a silver
platter. She fought hard and
had much blood shed. And when
Israel was attacked from all
sides by hostile Arab neighbors,
there were no solemn UN
speeches or troop landings to
"protect the integrity" of Is-
rael. And when Fedayeen were
intent not on "subverting" Is-
rael, but destroying her, there
were no troops, nor even sym-
pathy.
And when Nasserism became
too oppressive for Israel and
she struck back in self-defense,
what happened? Britain rushed
in, with the same objectives as
Israel, but at the same time de-
nouncing her.
Any neutrality Israel may
possess was forced on her by
countries who protect "indirect
aggression" against certain
countries, while ignoring direct
aggression and attempts at ut-
ter destruction of other coun-
tries.
This country has begun to
rue its mad rush at saving Nas-
ser in 1956. We join the Free
Press in feeling foolish and hu-
miliated for that action. We too
regret that our gladly-given
arms are now being used by
the "other side." But please,
let us direct our diatribes where
they Are due, rather than reach
for a convenient (and conven-
iently small) scapegoat.
