Mestel, 74, noted Jewish author
and actor, died at his home here
Aug. 6. He is the author of a
two-volume work, "War Notes
of a Jewish Officer," describing
his experiences in World War I,
as an officer in the Austrian
army. He is also the author of
several books of Jewish poetry
and dramatic work.
Born in Zlotshev, Galicia, he
studied at the Vienna Conserva-
tory. When World War I was
over, he came to the United
States and devoted himself to
the Jewish theater. He was a
member of the Yiddish Art
Theater for many years. He
also played in Jewish theaters
in Latin America.
