NEWARK, N.J. (JTA) —
After 98 years in Newark, Con-
gregation Oheb Shalom com-
pleted a move to the suburban
community of South Orange
where it occupied a large new
edifice which houses all syna-
gogue activities and a large
Hebrew school.
The congregation was estab-
lished in downtown Newark by
a group of Bohemian immi-
grants in 1860. The door to the
old synagogue was closed after
leave - taking ceremonies with
the same key by which it was
opened in 1911.
Dr. Louis M. Levitsky, rabbi
of the congregation, pointed out
that "as a visible symbol of
our past," we moved the entire
pulpit of the old synagogue to
the chapel of the new building.
The ark, the eternal light, the
candelabra, the pulpit, chairs
and the reading tables have all
been transferred."
The main synagogue in the
new South Orange building will
seat 1,500 worshippers.
