Kasper Out of Jail

TRENTON, N.J. (JTA) —

WASHINGTON—Sen. Ralph E. Flanders in 1954 charged the
late Joseph R. McCarthy with causing "foreboding" among
Jews but more recently has made his own contribution to Jewish
fears.
It is not for their own safety that America's Jews fear.
Their apprehension springs mainly from anxiety lest Sen. Flan-
ders succeed in splitting America from Israel. By so doing, he
would further undermine American strength in the Near East.
Other members of Congress consider it fortunate that no
one is paying much attention to Sen. Flanders' recent attacks
on Israel. The Vermont Republican has apparently gained as
little support from fellow Republicans as he has among Demo-
crats.
Some consider it ironic that a Senator who considers him-
self a champion of Jewry today opposes the United Jewish Ap-
peal. Sen. Flanders has asked the U.S. Treasury Department to
investigate the tax-deductible status of UJA contributions.
Sen. Flanders maintains that he is not anti-Semitic but
"pro-Semitic." In 1952 he told the anti-Zionist "American Coun-
cil for Judaism" its contributions to America were great and
"May your good influence grow." In 1954 he noted in a speech
that Sen. McCarthy's "two closest associates are Hebrews."
Such has been his "pro-Semitism."

Sen. Flanders is retiring from the Senate at the end of this
session. He has indicated his last important Senate work will be
a sustained attack on Israel and the UJA.
In 1954 Sen. Flanders was full of concern lest Sen. McCarthy
"inflame religious bigotry" and "divide Americans." Yet Sen.
Flanders himself may now be doing just that.
The Flanders outburst against Israel recalled the Senator's
difference with Americans of various faiths. Sen. Flanders in
1954 -attacked Francis Cardinal Spellman for shaking hands
with Sen. McCarthy at a Roman Catholic Communion breakfast
of members of the New York Police Department.
Sen. Flanders asked if this meant "the imprimatur of inihil
obstat' (nothing objectionable) has been set by the Church on
these debonair campaigns to divide Americans on religious
lines?"
In his reply, Cardinal Spellman -wanted to know: "Is Sen.
Flanders uniting us?"

Five Neturei Karta Arrested in
New Jerusalem Demonstration

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Five
members of the Neturei Karta
sect were arrested late Satur-
day when several hundred ultra-
Orthodox sect members re-
fused to disperse a demonstra-
tion in front of Jerusalem's new
pool. Instead of leaving the
area as directed, they stoned
police cars and smashed win-
dows in the area.
Operating on its first Satur-
day, the pool was overcrowded
with every inch of dressing
space—built for 3.000 persons—
occupied. Tickets for Saturday
admission were on sale only
up to Friday and people who
sought to buy admissions on
Saturday were turned away.
Many attempted to scale the
fence and crash the pool. Scalp-
ers were selling tickets for two
and a half pounds, triple their
cost at the gate.
The Neturei Karta demonStra-
tion was held following a speech
by Rabbi Amram Blau, sect
leader who was released from
prison Friday after President
Yitzhak Ben-Zvi pardoned him

Arabs in U.S. Exploiting
Flanders' Anti-Israelism

NEW YORK, (AJP) — Arab
propagandists in this country,
including diplomats of the
United Arab Republic, are ex-
ploiting the recent anti-Israel
statement of Senator Flanders
in which he charged that the
full blame for all the Middle
Eastern trouble must be placed
squarely on the shoulders of
the Jewish State.
Interviewed by four foreign
correspondents, including the
AJP reporter, on the weekly
Foreign Press Association
WNYC radio program, United
Arab Republic press officer
Addul Magoud Hassan repeated
Sen. Flanders' charges, but
made them appear that Ameri-
cans generally "hold Israel re-
sponsible for • the Mideast
crisis."
When corrected by the AJP
reporter, who told him that
there happened to be only a
limited number of such "Amer-
icans" and that judging, by the
general American press, re-
flecting a cross section of the
nation, the American people
hold Col. Nasser responsible
for the Mideast crisis that led
to Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon,
Hassan countered with h the
charge that "the U.S. press,
especially one influential paper
(N.Y. Times) is evil and dirty."
Refusing to answer whether
Nasser would attend a summit
conference at which Ben-
Gurion was also a participant,
Hassan was skeptical as to the
possibility of a summit meeting
ever taking place.
