Dances at Community Camps Here

A charming Israeli "sabra"
(native) is bringing to campers
at Tamarack and Fresh Air
Camp information about her na-
tive land and her countrymen
during the current camping
season.
Miss Edy Harlaff, a new mem-
ber of the Fresh Air Society's
staff, is conducting classes at
both camps and is teaching
campers Hebrew songs and Is-
raeli dances.
At Tamarack, Miss Harlaff
meets regularly with campers
in small discussion groups
and answers questions about
Israel and Israelis, about the
daily life in the Jewish State
and the problems there.
One of the innovations she in-
troduced at Tamarack as well
as Fresh Air Camp is the Kab-
alat Shabbat program on Friday
evenings. It is the "welcome
the Sabbath" idea on the Sab-
bath Eve as contrasted with the
oneg Shabbat—the joy of the
Sabbath — programs conducted
on Saturdays.
Miss Harlaff also has met
with campers at the Jewish
Community Center Day Camps-
to teach them Hebrew songs
and dances.

grams she has arranged at
Tamarack was a Maccabiah,
campers having been divided
into four groups—Maccabees,
Pioneers, Palmach and Sabras.
Miss Harlaff received her
B. A. degree at the Hebrew Uni-
versity in Jerusalem last June.
Born in Jerusalem, she was
brought up in Haifa and studied
at the teachers' school of Beth
Sefer Hareali there.
Her father escaped to Israel
from Communist Russia, then
studied in Belgium before re-
turning again to Israel where
he now teaches at the Technion
and the Beth Sefer Hareali. He
also lectures in law and eco-
nomics courses. Her mother
came to Israel from Poland.
Miss Harlaff is a regular
member of the staff of Kol
Israel, the official Israel ra-
dio station. She began her
radio career with the under-
ground Kol Israel radio dur-
ing Israel's struggle for inde-
pendence against the British.
For her heroic efforts, she
was awarded the coveted Ha-
ganah Pin in Jerusalem two
months ago.
At the dedication of the new
Hebrew University campus in
Jerusalem recently, she ap-
peared on the program in dra-
matic readings that were inter-
spersed. between the speeches
of Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion, President Itzhak Ben-
Zvi and the university presi-
dent, Dr. Mazar
The invitation extended to
Miss Harlaff to become a mem-
ber of the Detroit Jewish com-
munity-sponsored camps came
about through an interesting in-
cident. She wa-s a hostess on
the SS: Theodor Herzl's maiden
trip from New York to Haifa,
and was conducting "Hebrews
Without Tears" programs for
the tourists. Mrs. Nathan Silver-
man, of Detroit, one of the pas-
sengers, unlike the others who
enrolled in Miss Harlaff's "ad-
vanced" classes, enrolled in the
"beginners' " course. She was
the only "beginner"—although
she knows some Hebrew. That
marked the beginning of a
friendship between the two
women.
When Mr. Silverman came to
Israel to join his wife on her
tour, he saw Miss Harlaff in
action at several programs and
at the Hebrew University event.
The invitation to her to come -to
Detroit stemmed from these
meetings.
After her assignments at the
Fresh Air Society camps and
the Jewish Center Day Camp,
Miss Harlaff is being assigned
for a year as a sheliach in this
country for the Moatzot Hapoa.
lot, the parent organization of
the Pioneer Women. She will
be in Detroit again in behalf of
the Pioneer Women's groups
here from Sept. 8 to 13. She
will participate also in a lead-
ers' meeting at Tamarack after
the camping season and in a
Michigan Youth Conference at
Fresh Air Camp on Aug. 29.

Jewish Almanac Outlines
Yugoslav Jewry's Status

The development of Yugo-
slav Jewry since the end of
World War II is review by Dr.
Albert Vajs, the president of
the Federation of Jewish Com-
munities of Yugoslavia, in the
"Jewish Almanac 1955-56,"
newly published by the organi-
zation in Belgrade.
Dr. Vajs claims that the Yu-
goslav Jews, "judged by their
vitality rank among the most
positive Jewish communities in
the present day Europe, though
numerically among the small-
est."
Dr. Vajs' report is one of the
main features in the 400-page
almanac which, with a brief
summary in- English, is divided
into three basic sections,- his-
torical, cultural and sociologi-
cal, and surveys dealing with
the life of the community. The
second section contains short
stories, poems and- fragments
of novels and essays, most
dealing with the sufferings of
Yugoslav Jewry during the last
war. Part three lists the more
important events in the com-
munity since the publication
of the last almanac in 1954.
Israel's pivotal role in de-
veloping Jewish culture and
strengthening the bonds link-
ing Jewish communities
throughout the world, is em-
phasized by Dr. Vajs. Despite
differences between the various
communities, they regard "the
State of Israel as the strongest
pivot for the preservation of
Jewish cultural values and a
guarantee of further develop-
ment," the Yugoslav leader
declared.
