NCJW Announces
Study Award Winners

The National Council of Jew-
ish Women named a Moroccan
public health nurse and a "New
American" social worker as win-
ners of its Katharine Asher
Engel graduate study awards.
The selection of Miss Ninette
Cohen of Casablanca and
Pinchas Huberfeld of New York
was announced by Mrs. Moise
S. Cahn of New Orleans, presi-
dent of the council, who said
the grants are named in honor
of the immediate past President
of the Council, who died last
year.
Miss Cohen will study this
year at the Boston University
school of nursing, and Huber-
feld at the Yeshiva University
school of social work.
The Council President de-
clared that Miss Cohen was
chosen for the two-year scholar-
ship "because of the grave need
for trained public health
nurses in Morocco. which has
hindered the development of
public health nursing services
recommended by the World
Health Organization in 1956."
With only three trained nurses
for the Moroccan Jewish com-
munity, Miss Cohen, at 24, has
trained a staff of ten erstwhile
midwives, nurses' aides and
practical nurses for the modern
OSE maternal and child health
center in Casablanca. A 1956
graduate of the French school
of nursing in Morocco, she is
administrator of nursing service
at the center.
Huberfeld, Mrs. Cahn stated,
"symbolizes the courage and
tenacity of so many New Amer-
icans who were exposed to the
worst of Hitlerism, but have
had such faith in the worth of
man that they have gone on to
serve humanity." He immigrat-
ed to the United States last year
and was selected for the schol-
arship after a lengthy search
for a candidate.
