Jacob Mazer, of 746 Coiling-
wood, who for many years was
one of Michigan's leading ath-
letes and best known sports
enthusiasts, died Saturday after
a long illness, in Harper Hospi-
tal, at the age of 81.
Funeral services were held
Monday morning in Brown Me-
morial Chapel of Temple Beth
EL
Surviving him are his wife,
Dora; two sons, William M. of
Detroit and Robert N. of New
York City; five grandchildren,
a great-grandchild and a brother,
Joseph, of San Diego, Calif.
Very active here as the head
of the Mazer-Cressman Cigar
Co., from which he retired re-
cently, Mazer was best known
in the sports world. His fame
began when he excelled as a
bicycle racer in Pittsburgh, as
a youth. Then he rose to fame
as a basketball player here,
when he came to Detroit in
1901.
Mazer first played here with
the Downtown YMCA basket-
ball team, then helped organize
the Detroit Athletic Club quin-
tet which was for many years
one of the best basket ball ag-
gregations in the state.
During his early years as a
basketball player, Mazer es-
tablished a world record of
sinking 17 consecutive free
throws in a single game.
His amazing enthusiasm for
sports was evidenced again
when, at the age of 55, he

Israel Attacked by
Catholic, Zuckerman
and Ultra-Orthodox

NEW YORK (AJP) — The
current issue of the propa-
ganda "Newsletter", published
by the Palestine Arab Refugee
Office here, is filled with anti-
I s r a el propaganda originally
published by a Catholic Priest,
by ultra-Orthodox Jews and by
William Zuckerman, editor of
the anti-Israel Jewish News-
letter.
The Catholic Priest, Father
Ralph Gorman, is quoted as
follows: "It is our firm con-
viction that it was an act of
injustice as well as of incred-
ible stupidity for the UN to
create the state of Israel on
Arab territory. It would be an
act of reparation to the Arabs
to force the Israelis back be-
hind the 1947 boundaries and
resettle the refugees in the re-
covered territory. Some such
drastic action must be taken
. . . It will be too bad if such
an action has to be inaugurated
by the Reds, but if it is, we
should support it . . ."
The Arab propaganda sheet
also republished part of an
anti-Israel ad which the ultra-
Orthodox "National Committee
for Freedom of Religion in
Israel" had inserted in the
N.Y. Times recently. Other
items in the "Newsletter" in-
clude columns by Zuckerman
and his ilk.

Zionism Blasted by
Jehovah Witnesses

NEW YORK (AJP) — The
Jehovah Witnesses of the
Watchtower Society — who
opened an eight-day inter-
national convention at the
Yankee Stadium and P o 10
grounds on Sunday, July 27—
have been distributing anti-
Israel literature bordering on
anti-Semitism. 0 n e pamphlet
titled "Why Zionism Must
Fail," shows the word "Zion-
ism" in crude Hebrew-style
letters over a Star of David.
Despite biblical prophecy
which prophesies the return of
the Jews to the Holy Land, the
"Jehovah Witnesses" maintain
that Zionism "is of the devil
and has no Scriptural basis."

Sarah Stein, Dies
Sarah Stein, of 19334 San
Juan, died July 29. She leaves
a son, Dr. Albert; two daugh-
ters, Mrs. Sidney Sacks and
Mrs. Archie Werner; two
brothers, Max and Isadore
Burnstein. Services were Wed-
nesday at Ira Kaufman Chapel.
