Church-State Relations Discussed in New Study

NEW YORK, (JTA)—"There
can be no lasting resolution of
the church-state problem until
the people, not the courts, re-
flect upon just what it is that
aggrieves them, what vagueness
torments them," a five-part
study of the role of religion in
a free society released this week
by the Fund for the Republic
states.
This opinion is stated by Ar-
thur Cohen, publisher of Meri-
dian Books, and author of the
essay "The Problem of Plural-
ism," one of the five parts of
the Fund for the Republic
study. Contributors to the 108-
page pamphlet, "Religion in a

Ban Reform Services
in Israeli Center

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — A
Reform congregation charged
that officials of a community
center operated by the Wo-
men's League for Israel re-
fused, allegedly under Ortho-
dox pressure, to permit con-
tinued use of the hall in the
center for religious services.
The Reform group, which
held services in the hall of
the Bet Hechalutzot for several
months, said the action would
deprive its members of a place
to worship during the coming
High Holy Days. Members of
the congregation have started
a campaign to win reversal of
the local action. They are
sending letters to Mrs. H.
Cahane, president of the Wo-
men's League, at its head-
quarters in New York City.
