MUNICH, (JTA) — Dr. Hans
Eisele, former Buchenwald con-
centration camp physician wh6
fled to Cairo when it was re-
vealed that he was responsible
for murdering at least 200 Jews
during the Nazi reign, was ar-
rested by Interpol (Internation-
al Police) in Cairo.
Max von Decker, Bavarian
State Prosecutor, has been sus-
pended from office as a result
of Dr. Eisele's escape from
Germany. Minister of Justice
Willi Ankermueller, who sus-
pended von Decker, announced
that Dr. Eisele's arrest in Cairo
had been requested by the Fed-
eral Bureau of Criminal Investi-
gation. Government authorities
believe it is possible that the
United Arab Republic may con-
sent to Dr. Eisele's extradition.
It was understood here_ that
Dr. Eisele was due to be interro-
gated officially by Cairo police
and that Ministry of the Interior
would decide to question si-
multaneously — the request for
extradition and his plea for
political asylum.
A German News Agency cor-
respondent in Cairo, who inter-
viewed the physician before the
arrest, reported Dr. Eisele dis-
claimed the accusations against
him. The doctor was quoted as
saying "I never killed a human
being in all my life" and as de-
claring that he left Germany
because "the political atmos-
phere is such that it would have
been impossible for me to get a
fair trial."
Before his arrest, according
Israel Reports Health
Progress to WHO
MINNEAPOLIS (JTA) — Is-
rael has made "remarkable"
strides in the field of public
health, the World Health Assem-
bly was told by Israel - Barzilai,
Minister of Health in the Israel
Cabinet.
Addressing the Assembly as
head of Israel's delegation to
the session of the United Na-
tions specialized agency, Bar-
zilai reported that his country
has raised life expectancy, in
the last decade, to better than
70 years. Israel's infant mortal-
ity rate, he said, ranks with the
lowest in the world, it has cut
tuberculosis deaths to a low fig-
ure, and the country has eradi-
cated malaria, one of the most
dreaded killers in former Pales-
tine.
Barzilai announced that he has
invited Dr. Jonas Salk, Ameri-
can discoverer of anti-poliomye-
litis vaccine, to visit Israel, and
that Dr. Salk has promised to
make every effort to accept the
invitation this year. According
to Mr. Barzilai, the incidence of
polio in Israel has been reduced
by 90 percent, thanks to the use
of Salk vaccine.
to information received here,
Dr. Eisele made contact in Cairo
with Johannes von Leers, a for-
mer Nazi propaganda writer who
had himself converted to Mo-
hammedanism and is reportedly
propaganda chief to Egypt's
President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
Minister of Justice Anker-
mueller conceded today that, in
his opinion, the judiciary de-
partment, and not the police,
was responsible for Eisele's es-
cape. Dr. Ankermueller called
the Eisele case "the most un-
fortunate failure and the great-
est scandal in the German judi-
ciary since the war."
The Minister said that, when
he looked into von Decker's
dossier, following his suspen-
sion, on Friday, he made the
"startling discovery" that von
Decker had been a member of
the Nazi Party since 1931. Von
Decker was reinstated to office,
the Justice Minister found, be-
cause he had held no office in
the Nazi Party and because per-
sons who had been persecuted
by the Nazis had vouched for
him.
Von Decker's dossier showed
that, in 1954, he had shunted
aside charges of perjury against
Dr. Eisele when the physician
denied charges showing he had
injected hundreds of Buchen-
wald prisoners with poison. At
that time, Dr. Eisele was ac-
cused of having shown, at Bu-
chenwald, "a sheer lust to kill."
But von Decker's department
did not press prosecution against
the physician.
It was also learned that the
Nazi physician had been "de-
nazified" by a German tribunal
sitting in Freiberg while he was
still serving a ten-year sentence
in the Landsberg prison. The
Freiberg court's action was
based on the fact that an Allied
military court had commuted
a death sentence and then later
a life sentence. This, the Frei-
berg tribunal argued, proved
that he had been convicted "es-
sentially" only because he had
been a doctor in a Nazi camp.
It discounted the evidence that
he had poisoned and otherwise
killed hundreds of camp in-
mates.
It is expected that all these
facts are included in a dossier
on Dr. Eisele being forwarded
to Cairo authorities by Interpol.
"I confess to some pleasure
from the stinging rhetoric of a
rattling oath in the mouth of
truckmen and teamsters. How
laconic and brisk it is by the
side of a page of the North
American Review."
—Ralph Waldo Emerson.
