Glubb Pasha Reveals Double Role as Lover of Arabs, Foe of Israel

THE DETROIT JEWIS H NEW S — Friday July 18,

00 1

A few weeks ago, it became
known that Godfrey Glubb,
son of Lt. Gen. Sir John Glubb,
was becoming a Moslem and
is marrying an Arab girl.
In a sense, that was hardly
news. Long ago, it was said
that his father, too, was in-
tending to become a Moslem.
In fact, the general who
"saved" the Jordanian army

World Bible Quiz

(Translation of Hebrew column
published by Brit Ivrit Olamit)

In Israel, too, there is a keen
interest in quizzes, especially in
those broadcast over the radio
(we do not have television yet)
though the prizes are smaller
than those in other countries.
Now everybody is interested
in the International Bible Quiz
which will be held in Jerusalem
at the end of the month of Au-
gust. Representatives from many
countries of the world will par-
tcipate in this quiz. In those
countries Bible quizzes have
been organized by local radio
and television stations. Those
who won the natonal quizzes will
be brought to Israel by the El
Al Aviation Company, and here
the World Quiz will be held, in
which, of course, the Israel rep-
resentative will take part.
At present competitions are
being held to establish who is
to represent Israel. More than
four hundred entrants (people)
have registered for these com-
petitions, including students of
the universities, rabbis, lawyers,-
doctors, soldiers, agriculturists
and clerks. The youngest among
them is sixteen years old, and
the oldest is already past sev-
enty.
First of all district quizzes are
held in the six districts of the
State of Israel. Those who win
the district contests will meet
for the contest in Jerusalem,
and from among them will be
selected the representative of
Israel in the International Com-
petition.
What is the great prize await-
ing the winner? The manage-
ment of the Israel Broadcasting
Service, which is organizing the
contest, has not yet revealed the
secret.

pendence is best known as
Glubb Pasha.
This is the man who, in his
book "A Soldier With the
Arabs," publisher by Harper,
continues to show so much
animus towards Israel.
There is no doubt that
Glubb's book is poisoning
many minds—due to the in-
ability to reach all who read
his book with the facts. He
sounds fair, but an analysis
of the facts will prove the in-
justice of his contentions and
the distortion of many facts.
* * *
In some respects, Glubb
sheds much light on the Israel-
Arab war and on the Arab
relations during the 1948 con-
flict. It is his insistence that
Zionism is a menace—a view
that has confused the think-
ing of many writers and states-
men—that is at the root of his
bias.
His evaluation of King Ab-
dullah, who was assassinated
when it became known that he
had intended to make peace
with Israel, is interesting and
undoubtedly fair. With Abdul-
lah he had attempted to stem
some of the militant attitudes
towards Israel. But on the
score of these items it is all-
too-evident that he is trying

Ben-Gurion Attends

GINEGAR — Prime Minister
David Ben-Gurion was among
the hundreds of guests from Is-
rael and Britain who paid hom-
age to the memory of Blanche
Dugdale, niece and biographer
of Lord • Balfour, on the 10th
anniversary of her death. The
scene was a clearance in the
Balfour Forest, planted by the
Jewish National Fund 30 years
ago and now containing over
400,000 trees.

hard, especially in view of
his own expulsion from Jor-
dan, to clear his standing with
Arab politicians and to redeem
his record as a soldier and as
an Arabo-phile.
His attitude is explained by
Glubb himself. He writes in
his book: "When I had spent
five years among the Arabs,
I decided to change the basis
of my whole career. I made up
my mind to resign my commis-
sion in the British army and
devote my life to the Arabs.
My decision was largely emo-
tional. I loved them."
Loving them, he has exag-
gerated, has tampered with
truth, undoubtedly unconscious-
ly, as a lover would. That is
why he still holds to the view
and propagates it that "the
creation and maintenance of
Israel by armed force was a
mistake." Of course, he does
not tell his readers that "the
force" he speaks of is Israel's
defense army.
* * *
His major exaggeration is in
giving the impression that
Israel had a vast army when
she defended herself against
the onslaught of all the Arab
states in 1948. There were
hardly more than 10,000 Isra-
elis in the defense force, as
against tens of thousands in
the Arabs' mechanized armies.
Only the strength of Glubb
Pasha's British Legion helped
the Jordanians in holding on
to the Old City of Jerusalem.
Glubb's assertions are fan-
tastic from another angle. The
Israeli freedom fighters had to
ward off Arab attacks on all
frontiers and could not even
face Glubb and his army alone.
Only a fraction of the Israeli
fighters defended the New City
of Jerusalem. Is it to save face
that Glubb now exaggerates
Israel's strength? When the
Israeli story is told in full, the
face-saving won't help him.
New immigrants, untrained,

with meager arms, did the job in that portion of his tale--
against the Arabs and Glubb and a tale it is.

security. Any wonder that
