TEL AVIV—A Haganah dec-
oration giving official recogni-
tion to the pre-State Jewish de-
fense force was the center of a
heated dispute Tuesday. It in-
volved not only leaders of the
one-time Herut underground or-
ganization but also leaders of
the Mapai party who had been
active in the formation and di-
rection of the Haganah.
Members of right-wing Herut,
political successor to the under-
derground Ir-
gun army,
were the first
to protest the
award of state
decorations to
only one un-
derground or-
ganization.
S u bsequently,
prominent Ha-
ganah leaders,
like_ Gen. Jo-
Sharett
hanan Ratner, forMer Prime
Minister Moshe Sharett and
others also protested the pro-
cedure of awarding the dec-
oration.
The most widely publicized
correspondence was that be-
tween Sharett and Shimon Per-
ess, general director of the Is-
rael Defense Ministry, 'which
was directly responsible for dis-
tribution of the decoration.
Sharett, who was one of the
founders of Haganah and re-
sponsible for its activities for a
time, was not invited to attend
the major decoration award
ceremony at which Prime Min-
ister David Ben-Gurion made
awards to a group of Haganah
leaders.
It was reported that a few
days later Sharett received the
application form for a decora-
tion and replied with a protest
against the "lack of knowledge
of Haganah history" in the
award idea and with an ironic
thanks that "at last you have
remembered me."
Sharett refused to accept the
decoration despite an assertion
by Ben-Gurion that he regretted
the "mistake" of the Defense
Ministry in not inviting Sharett
to the ceremony. Oved Ben-Ami;
former mayor of Natanya and
regional commander and Haga-
nah founder, also did not re-
ceive the decoration.

JERUSALEM—A spokesman
for the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs expressed "great sur-
prise" Wednesday over the
Polish Foreign Ministry's ex-
pulsion of Jacob Barmor, First
secretary of the Israel Legation
in Warsaw.
The Polish announcement
accused Barmor of "trying
systematically to recruit Polish
citizens for activities contrary
to the interests of the Polish
nation." Barmor had just com-
pleted a four-year tour of duty.
The Israel spokesman said
that Barmor had taken official
leave of Polish officials "in the
best possible atmosphere,"
shortly before the expulsion
announcement and that top
Polish officials had attended
a farewell party for him.
Israel sources said there was
no basis for the charges and
that they had no idea what
motivated the action. They
noted that Israel-Polish rela-
tions had been developing "in
the best spirit," including
trade relations. They said that
recently relations had reached
the point of visits by groups
of Polish tourists to Israel.
