MILWAUKEE (JTA)—A 28-
year-old rabbi, father of three
sons, will be able to complete
his final year of medical school
because of the generosity of
Danny Thomas, Lebanese-de-
scended Catholic comedian who
has frequently aided Jewish
causes.
Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski,
son of Rabbi Jacob Twerski
whom he served as assistant at
Cong. Beth Yehuda of Milwau-
kee, is hoping to specialize in

psychiatry. But trying to raise
a family on the slender pay of
an assistant rabbi while attend-
ing medical school started be-
coming too big a burden, al-
though the bearded young
Orthodox rabbi was able to
finance part of his medical edu-
cation by loans.
His plight came to the atten-
tion of the comedian when
Thomas had lunch with offi-
cials of the University who told
the comic about Rabbi Twerski's
financial struggle. After some
inquiries, Thomas told one of
his luncheon partners, James
Quinlin, business manager of
the University, to tell Rabbi
Twerski that the comedian had
decided to assure the needed
funds of between $3,500 and
$4,000, "even if I have to raise
it all myself."
According to Iry Kupcinet,
Chicago Sun-Times columnist, a
fund was raised then and there.
Rabbi Twerski, who has never
met Thomas, said he hoped to
use the money to finish medical
school, start a practice "and
earn enough money to repay all
these loans."
He said he also hoped some
day to set up a scholarship fund
"to help some deserving mar-
ried man through medical
school. I know how tough it is
for medical students with fami-
lies to support."

The Hillel Day School of Detroit became a reality on June 23, when a group of
mothers met to enroll their children and to confer with the school's teachers. After
the formalities of matriculating the youngsters, the group met at lunch, at the Labor
Zionist Institute on Schaefer, where the classes will be conducted. The photograph
shows the children who were enrolled that afternoon.. The mothers and teachers
are shown, from the left: Mesdames Maurice Floch, first grade teacher; Sam Gold-
berg, Meyer Stein, Harold Berry, Percy Kaplan, Kurt Singer, Oscar Kramer, Jascha
Selman, Wilbur Stein, Jacob Axelrod, Leonard Bensky, Emanuel Applebaum, Nicholas
Fenakel, Saul Rose, Arthur Levine, Noam Shudofsky, kindergarten teacher, and Oscar
Bigman, seated. Mothers who enrolled their children but who are not in the photo
are: Mesdames Milton Arm, Leo Brodman, Murray Frumin, Alan Gold, Philmore
Leemon and Philip Minkin.

Rabbinical Alliance Asks
Dissolution of Religious
Parties in 'Secular' Israel

LIBERTY, N.J. (JTA) — A
call for the abolition of all reli-
gious parties in Israel was
voiced here this week by Rabbi
Samuel A. Turk, president of
t h e Rabbinical Alliance of
America, in an address at the
organization's annual conven-
tion.
Rabbi Turk urged both secu-
lar and religious forces within
the State of Israel to halt the
cultural strife which, he said,
has prevailed since the incep-
tion of the Jewish State. This
could be accomplished, Dr. Turk
asserted, by a mutual declara-
tion recognizing I s r a el as a
secular state in no way repre-
senting the fulfillment of Jew-
ish hopes for the millenia.

Guest Rabbi at
Evergreen Services

Special sabbath services at
8:30 p.m., today, will be held
by Evergreen Jewish Cong.,
when the congregants; play host
to Rabbi Hyman Agress in the
social hall of Cong. Ahavas
Achim, 19190 Schaefer.
Rabbi Agress, a 1955 graduate
of Yeshiva University, will oc-
cupy the pulpit. He has previ-
ously served synagogues in
Toronto, Ont., and Clayton, N.J.
An oneg shabbat will follow the
service.
The guest rabbi also will of-
ficiate at sabbath morning serv-
ices, to be held at 9 a.m., Sat-
urday, in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Nachman Tevlo, 19190
Huntington.
With the new synagogue
building growing rapidly, on
Evergreen north of 7 Mile, the
congregation is conducting an
intensive membership drive. In-
formation on membership may
be obtained from Dave Simon,
KE. 3-0197.

"We must learn to reawaken
and keep ourselves awake, not
by mechanical aids, but by an
infinite expectation of the dawn,
which does not forsake us in
our soundest sleep." — Henry
David Thoreau

The rabbinical leader sug-
gested that - such a secular state,
which would have complete au-
tonomy for local Orthodox com-
munities, would assure that Or-
thodox Jews could live a full
life as they saw it. At the same
time, he said, secular Zionists
must cease to speak of Israel
in terms of Jewish redemption
and the religious Jews must not
try to use the coercive power
of the state to enforce religious
legislation.
The delegates were told there
was a "dire need" for mission-
izing by Orthodox Jewry to draw
into its orbit the "uncommitted"
and unaffiliated Jews of Amer-
ica, by Rabbi Bernard Wein-
berger, executive vice-president
of the Rabbinical Alliance of
America.
Addressing a session on "re-
appraisal of Jewish education
today," Rabbi Ralph Pelcovitz,
a former president of the alli-
ance, declared that the wide-
spread growth of the Hebrew
day school movement "augurs
well for the future of American
Orthodoxy, but called for re-
examination of the day school's
curriculum to give the Jewish
child a "more extensive and
intensive familiarity with Jew-
ish tradition." The rabbis also
heard a dissertation by Rabbi
Mordecai Savitsky of Boston on
the ramifications of intermar-
riage.

Omit Congregations
Aiding in School Study

In a story last week which
indicated the rapid growth of
congregational schools in the
Detroit area, the religious
schools of Temple Beth El and
Beth Abraham Synagogue were
inadvertently omitted from the
list of schools participating in
the study.
