ADL Files Complaint
Against N.Y. Resort
A complaint charging The
Mohawk, a hotel in Old Forge,
N. Y., with "unlawful discrim-
inatory practice" has been
filed with the New York State
Commission Against Discrimin-
ation.
The complaint was registered
by the Anti-Defamation League
of Bnai Brith on behalf of
Leonard Cohen of Brooklyn,
N. Y., who accused The Mo-
hawk of rejecting his request
for an accommodation solely
"because of my being a mem-
ber of the Jewish faith."
The League presented evi-
dence to the State Commission
showing that in 1957 the owner
and manager of The Mohawk
signed a statement that the ho-
tel restricts its patronage to
Christians. This, the League
pointed out, violates the New
York State statute barring dis-
crimination in places of public
accommodation.

Only 100 Jewish Families
Reported Left in Indonesia
SYDNEY, (JTA) — Only 100
Jewish families remain in In-
donesia, it was reported here by
a former communal leader in
that country who arrived in
Australia for permanent settle-
ment. -
Though the Indonesian au-
thorities have displayed no
overt hostility toward the Jews,
recent political and economic
disruptions have made life more
difficult for Indonesian Jews,
and many have left the country.
Those who remain regret a lack
of ties to the State of Israel.

Russia to Publish
Centennial Tribute
to Sholom Aleichem
OBITUARIES
UNITED NATION S, N.Y.
(JTA) — Obviously attempting
to counter-act criticism against
anti-Semitism in the Soviet
Union, the USSR delegation
here distributed information
about plans being made now in
Russia to celebrate the hun-
dredth anniversary of the birth
of Sholom Aleichem, famed
Yiddish writer, next year.
Observers here noted partic-
ularly that the original article
announcing the Sholom Alei-
chem anniversary plans ap-
peared in a Communist propa-
ganda organ, Soviet Weekly,
published in English by the Rus-
sian embassy in London.
Headed "Sholom Aleichem"
and subtitled "His Works Don't
Collect Dust on Library Shelves,"
the articles admits that "his
books were read not only by
the Russians, but by the Kir-
ghiz and the Kazakhs, the Ta-
jiks and the Georgians, the
Ukrainians and the Byelo-
russians," adding that "the
popularity of this classic of
Jewish literature has not
waned. "During Soviet times,"
the article continues, "Sholom
Aleichem's works have been
published in 15 languages of
the peoples of the USSR, in-
cluding Yiddish; 48'7 editions
have appeared in a total of
5,372,000 copies . . . His com-
plete works have been pub-
lished in Yiddish three times,
his selected works twice."
The article announces that
last year a Russian language
edition of 165,000 copies of-Sho-
lom Aleichem's "From the Mar-
ket Place" was sold out "within
days." Next year, the USSR's
embassy publication declares,
the Russian State Publishing
House will issue in Russian a
six-volume edition of selected
works from the writings of the
famous Yiddish writer. "Well-
known translators," states the
announcement, "are working on
new translations."
The anniversary publications
will also include works by "So-
viet Jewish writers and critics,"
among these a number of essays
on Sholom Aleichem, a novel
based on the life of Sholom
Aleichem by Abraham Kagan,
and a biographical novel "by
the late Soviet Jewish writer
Uriya Finkel."
These works planned in mem-
ory of one of the greatest Yid-
dish writers will be in the Rus-
sian language, and not in Yid-
dish. The publication of Yid-
dish books has practically been
banned in the USSR since the
liquidation of all Jewish cul-
tural institutions.
