Dictatorship and Anti-Semitism
General Rafael Trujillo., the
absolute ruler of the Domini-
can Republic governs his na-
tion with an iron fist . . .
Political commentators classify
the General as a dictator,
whose regime is without doubt
totalitarian . . . Yet paradoxic-
ally enough the Jewish record
of the Dominican Republican
is unusually good . . . During
the Hitlerian period, in 1938,
the Dominican Republic was
the only nation to offer un-
limited asylum to refugees . . .
In Sosua, on property belong-
ing to Gen. Trujillo, Jewish re-
fugees from Hitler settled and
rehabilitated themselves . . .
Sosua is a 27,000 acre tract
on the northern coastal farm-
land of the Republic . . . The
task of settling these refugees
was financed by the American
Jewish Joint Distribution Com-
mittee . . . What's more, the
General is reported as having
used a fortune from his personal
funds to improve Sosua . . .
The Trujillo - Joint project
worked out fine . . . Each
homesteader received 75 acres,
a two-room frame house, a
barn, 10 cows, a horse, a mule
and a loan for miscellaneous
needs . . . although each
settler manages. his farm indi-
vidually, Sosua is a cooperative
colony . . . But the extraor-
dinary thing about Sosua is
that the settlement is a huge
success . . . It thrives as a
modern farm community with
a population of 212 . . . Its
high grade butter, milk, cheeses
bring special comment when-

NCRW Sends 200
Retarded to Camp

Northwest Child Rescue
Women have this year provided
for camperships for 200 men-
tally retarded children. The
children are now at Detroit
Recreation Camp, Brighton,
Mich., as a result of the pro-
gram, which is conducted in co-
operation with the Detroit As-
sociation for. Retarded Children
and the Detroit Department of
Parks and Recreation.
Since NCRW joined the pro-
gram in 1953 they have con-
tributed $20,000 for the support
•of the undertaking. The week
of camping will be climaxed on
Saturday with a party in the
camp's recreation room. Mem-
bers and guests of the NCRW
will attend.

tion last year topped 3,250,000
quarts, and butter and cheese
output was around 5,500
pounds every week . . . The
Sosua meat-processing plant,
turning out quality products,
has an annual volume of some
$250,000 . . . In addition to
Sosua, there is a Jewish popu-
lation of some 450 in Ciudad
Trujillo, to whom the Gen-
eralissimo last year donated a
$60,000 Jewish Community cen-
ter . . .
Only a few months ago, the
Dominican government
announced that it is prepared
to accept up to 5,000 Jewish
refugees from Egypt as a posi-
tive measure to help ease ten-
sion in the Middle East . . .
Quite a complex character this
General Trujillo, who is feared
as a ruthless dictator yet at the
same time has given incontro-
vertible evidence that he has
compassion for the persecuted
. . . In this respect he is posi-
tively unique.
