Jerusalem Calling

A

New Neighbor

Translation of Hebrew column on
left. Published by Brit Ivrit Olamit.

Every year our neighbor rents
a room to a student of the He-
brew University. At the begin-
ning of this year he published
an advertisement in the news-
paper that he had a room to
let, and a few days later a young
student came to him. He made
an impression of a nice pleasant
boy, and on the first of the
month went in to live there.
It was only after some weeks
after we had become friendly
with him that we learned that
he was an Arab student. We
were very surprised because he
spoke excellent Hebrew and
spoke about all the affairs of
the State like one of the Jewish
students.
He told us that more than
60 Arab students are today
studying at the Hebrew Univer-
sity. From his village alone, 10
students, including one girl,
have come this year. Most of the
Arab students are studying East-
ern studies or Arab literature,
but among them are students in
practically all other subjects.
In addition our Arab neighbor
told us that the appearance of
his village has changed since the
establishment of the State so
that it can hardly be recognized.
The woman no longer has to
carry water from the well, be-
cause she has water from taps
in her house. The oil lamp, too,
belongs to the past, as the vil-
lage has been linked with
the electric network. In the
recent (last) years the Arab
farmer has learned to use the
tractor and other agricultural
machines, and perhaps within a
few years it will be difficult to
find donkeys in an Arab village,

Rabbi Isaac Lewin, speaking
before an overflow crowd at
the Agudath Israel Banquet
held recently at the Dexter
Young Israel, recounted his
work as the Agudah representa-
tive at the U. N. and called for
support in protest against the
humane slaughter bill, which
Orthdox Jewry considers a
threat to Shehita.
Dr. Lewin told of similar
battles that have been fought
against humane slaughter bills
in Denmark, Sweden and other
countries.
The Agudah assembly at the
meeting passed a resolution op-
posing the bill. A copy of the
resolution was forwarded to
congressional representatives.

U.S. Orthodoxy
Hits 'Extremists'
on Demonstration

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
United Religious Organization
of America—composed of the
Mizrachi and the Hapoel Hamiz-
rachi groups—issued a state-
ment condemning the Neturei
Karta Orthodox group which
demonstrated against Israel
last week in front of the White
House in Washington.
The statement termed the
demonstrators a "small irre-
sponsible group of Jewish
extremists" and said that their
action "borders on denouncing
Israel before the non-Jewish
world. It emphasized that all
rabbinical and religious bodies
in the United States disasso-
ciate themselves from the
Neturei Karta extremists.
The statement pointed out
that the religious Jews of Is-
rael are represented in the
Jerusalem government, and
that the Israel Ministry of Re-
ligion is spending millions of
pounds annually to strengthen
religion in the country. "It is,
thus, an "absurdity to talk

about 'suppression of religion'
in Israel, thus, an absurdity
to extremist Neturei. Karta
group claims," the statement
decared.
(In Tel Aviv, Rabbi Judah
L. Maimon, aged and highly
respected religious leader of
Israel, called for excommuni-
cation of the Satmar Rebbe and
his followers for the White
House demonstration against
Israel last week which he
equated with treason against
the state.)
