SCA Gift to Japan's Crown Prince Greek Spy Sentenced After Trial in Israel

TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Alcibi-
ades Koukas, a Greek citizen,
was sentenced to four years'
imprisonment following his con-
viction on charges of spying
for the Egyptians. The 37-year
old former paratrooper in the
Greek Army was arrested last
September.
The sentencing judge, M. Ken-
net, acting president of the Tel
Aviv District Court, said there
was no doubt that Koukas had
been sent to Israel by Egyptian
agents operating out of Athens.
He expressed the hope that

New Era in Baseball
The San Francisco Giants
have come up with a Jewish
player named Don Taussig, an
outfielder who is playing a
role in the surge of the erst-
while New Yorkers toward the
top of the National League
heap. Johnny Antonelli, the
Giant southpaw ace, calls Taus-
sig "the new Sid Gordon." Bill
Rigney says of Taussig, who
comes from Long Island, "He's
the second best flychaser I
have."
Mike Gordon
Just how tough the baseball
game can be. Sid Gordon can
tell us. He fought his way up
laboriously from the minor
leagues to the majors and it
took him an extended period
of time to persuade both his
club officials and fans that he
was an authentic big leaguer.
Now Sid has a son who is
showing ability. Mike Gordon
is only 15 years old; but he al-
ready is taller than his father
and is impressing his coach at
Jamaica High School. Mike
doesn't hit well yet. but he
fields and throws well and
moves fast.
Sid, meanwhile, is now in
business, working for the Ex-
celsior Transparent Bags Co.,
in Yonkers, N.Y. He is still
- interested in baseball and is a
non-salaried commissioner of
the Bell Oak Pony and Junior
League in Queens. Sid played
ball for nearly 20 years so it
isn't hard to figure out why he
is willing to give, up time to
the sport which made him
famous.
Baseball in Israel
The United States Commit-
tee for Baseball in Israel ap-
pears to be making some prog-
ress. In a Tel Aviv suburb
there are three teams in oper-
ation and there is also a team
in one of Israel's kibbutzim.
The American Embassy has a
team, of course, and so has the
El Al Airlines. This is pretty
good for such a short period
of effort. We'd like to see
whether the Israelis use Amer-
ican terms for baseball or
make up their own. I know
that in Hebrew-speaking sum-
mer camps in the United States
there is a special list of words
for baseball, drawn from the
Hebrew. The game itself is
called "Kadoor bassis." In Is-
rael, I wouldn't be surprised
if they called it simply "Base-
ball," with an Israeli accent.

'Mathematics Study,'
Novel, 'Prehistoric
Man' in 5 Paperbacks

A fascinating narrative of
mathematics "from the time
man first began to use his ten
fingers for counting" is told in
"Makers of Mathematics" by
Alfred Hooper.
It is one of five very interest-
ing new paperbacks published
by Random House.
Another in this series includes
three novels by William Faulk-
ner — "Spotted Horses," "Old
Man" and "The Bear."
"Flight Into Space" by Jona-
than Norton Leonard," science
editor of Time Magazine, is a
combination of facts, fiction and
philosophy and is a fine piece
of scientific reporting.
Herbert Kuhn is the author
•of "On the Track of Prehistoric
Man" in which the author aims
"to tell of the times when man
emerged from darkness."
The fifth in this paperback
series is "The Muses Are
Heard," an account by Truman
Capote "of the journey to Lenin-
grad of 94 Americans and two
dogs, all c o n n e ct e d with the
widely heralded production of
`Porgy and Bess.' "

Koukas' fate would serve as a
warning to others who attempt-
ed to violate Israel's security
laws. A representative of the
Greek consulate here was pre-
sent at the trial since its be-
ginning on Jan. 28.
Koukas was arrested after
snapping pictures of military
camps and other army installa-
tions. In his room were found
pictures and "invisible ink." He
admitted having been contacted
in Athens by a "necktie mer-
chant" named Tanassis and an
Egyptian captain named Samir.

Japan's Crown Prince Mikasa, serious student of Jewish
religion and history, was hailed by prominent Synagogue Coun-
cil of America lay leaders for "having done more than any
other Japanese to further Japanese-Jewish understanding."
Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Stern of New York, SCA national spon-
sors, are shown above presenting Prince Mikasa with rare
prayer book in behalf of Synagogue Council, central coordinat-
ing agency for Orthodox, Conservatice, Reform Jewry. The
Sterns were received by the scholar-prince earlier this month.
Stern reported that "there is a small group of Japanese in-
tellectuals intensely interested in Judaism and Israel, but
recent reports of large-scale conversions of Japanese to Juda-
ism are exaggerated and unfounded." .
