Cultural Center

SUMMER SUITS

One of my close friends is
an architect by profession. He
works for a well-known Jeru-
salem firm, which has built a
number of fine buildings in the
city.
Some time ago I entered his
flat in the evening and found
him standing by a large table.
He was busy drawing plans and
paid no attention to me. I stood
quietly and only after a few
minutes he raised his head and
saw me. "Shalom (to you)! For-
give me,!" he said to me. "I
was so busy with my plans that
I did not know you were in the
room."
"What plans are you busy
with after your working hours?"
I asked him.
"I am participating in a com-
petition for the construction of
a Cultural Center in Jerusalem."
"Really (in truth)! I wish
you success."
"Thank you. I don't know if I
will win a prize, but it is a great
privilege for me to take part in
the competition. You know that
I am a native of Jerusalem and
I have always hoped that one
day (a time) we shall have a
fine, large hall for concerts and
performances.
."Some months ago a Jew
from Venezuela — Sherover by
name—donated a large sum of
money which will make possible
the erection of the cultural cen-
ter. The Municipality has al-
ready given a suitable plot of
land upon which the building
will be erected.
"Whether I win a prize or not,
the main thing is that within a
year we shall have a fine cen-
ter for cultural life in our city."
