Dr. Isaac Lewin, professor at
Yeshiva University, and one of
the foremost of Or t h o d ox
Jewry's spokesmen, will be
guest speaker at a discussion
open to the public, following
the Agudath Israel banquet,
which will be held at 6:30 p.m.,
Sunday, at the, Dexter Young
Israel center.
The Agudah, the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis- and Merkaz
invite the public to attend the
speech.
Rabbi Lewin is currently in
the forefront of the battle by
.Orthodox Jewry to defeat the
humane slaughter bill being
considered by Congress. Many
Orthodox Jews deem the bill a
threat to Shehitah, the ritual
slaughter of food animals.
In addition to the present
fight against the h u m an e
slaughter legislation, Dr. Lewin
has been among those in recent
years, who have been zealous
defenders against what they
considered threats to religious
Judaism. One such, was his
eloquent defense, before the
United Nations, .of the Jewish
Sabbath. The observance of the
Sabbath would have been in in-
creased danger had a proposed
calendar reform, then before
the U.N., gone .through: The re-
form in the calendar would have
had a "Blank Day" which would
have made .the determining of
the Sabbath progressively dif-
- ficult.
Dr. Lewin also was active in
the post-war reclaiming of Jew-
ish children who had been
raised by non-JeWs during the
holocaust. Rabbi Lewin is"
known also for his extensive
writings in the field of religion.
Dr. Lewin will answer any
questions from the audience, in
addition to his prepared speech,
at the gathering following the
banquet.
