Dispute; Jabotinsky Pin Rejected

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The
Haganah Ribbon, a decoration
which will be awarded to some
30,000 veterans of Israel's War
of Independence, was presented
to President Itzhak Ben-Zvi and
to Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion at ceremonies at the
President's office. The ribbons
were presented by Brig. Yaakov
Dori, former commander of the
Haganah, the Jewish under-
ground army, and first chief of
staff of the Israel Army of
Defense.
Moshe Sneh, one-time Ha-
ganah commander who is now
a Communist member of the
Knesse t, was not invited to
the ceremony since Ben-Gurion
had refused to pin the ribbon
on him. He will receive his
award by mail. The Herut Knes-
set faction rejected an invita-
tion to attend the ceremonies,
charging "blood discrimination"
between the Haganah on one
side and the Irgun Zvai Leumi
Stern group on the other.
In a letter to the Ministry of
Defense, the Herut group said
that it was proper for members
of the Haganah to receive
decorations from the Haganah
organization, but it warned that

if the Defense Ministry singled
out the Haganah as one of the
three underground organiza-
tions which fought for Israel's
independence, it created ques-
tions about service with the
two other groups.
The Herut deputies said they
could not approve the fact that
a State body granted decora-
tions to the members of only
one of the organizations and
no decorations to the members
of the others who had also shed
blood for the liberation of the
State.
Prof. Eri Jabotinsky, son of
the late Vladimir Jabotinsky,
the famed Zionist leader, re-
jected an invitation to accept
the posthumous award to his
father. He cited grounds simi-
lar to those of the Herut and
added another reason that "the
government has not found it
necessary to t r a n s f e r his
father's remains to Israel as
requested in his will."
Following a Bnai Brith deci-
sion in this respect, a special
delegation was received by
President Ben-Zvi, requesting
the President to use his good
offices to induce the govern-
ment to act to transfer Jabotin-
sky's remains to Israel.

Stop Giving Asylum to Artukovic,
Yugoslav Jews in Israel Urge U. S.

TEL AVIV—Representatives
of an association of Yugosalv
Jews who settled in this country
called on the United States
Government to cease giving asy-
lum to Adrija Artukovic, al-
leged war criminal, and to hand
him over the Yugoslav govern-
ment for trial.
In a memorandum handed
U.S. Ambassador Edward B.
Lawson, the Yugoslav Jews
called Artukovic, who now lives
in the Los Angeles area, "one
of the principal murderers of
Yugoslav Jewry in the Second
World War."
A hearing will be held later
this month in Federal Court
in Los Angeles on Yugoslavia's
request for the extradiction of

the former Minister for In-
terior of the Nazi puppet
Croatian state.
The memorandum accused
Artukovic of responsibility in
the murder of 30,000 Jews in
Croatia, pointing out that execu-
tion orders carried his signa-
ture. Documents discovered at
the end of the war, the memor-
andum said, painted a picture
of Artukovic giving direct or-
ders for "the torture of prison-
ers and the murder" of Jews.
The Yugoslav Jew's rejected
Artukovic's assertions that he
is "a victim of communism."
The memorandum expressed
the Jews' "feeling of disappoint-
ment" at the United States
giving asylum to "a man who
is not only a war criminal but
a common criminal as well."

Eban, Israel Ambassador to the
United States and head of the
Israel delegation to the United
Nations, was awarded an honor-
ary Doctor of Laws degree by
Brandeis University Monday.

the address at the seventh com-
