Miss Ruth Gruber attained the great distinction of having
written the best-selling book on Israel, shortly after the rebirth
of the Jewish State. Her "Israel Without Tears" is, to-date,
the widest circulated book on Israel. Now, Miss Gruber—she
is Mrs. Philip Michaels in private life—is expected to beat even
that excellent attainment with her newest work, "Israel Today,
Land of Many Nations," which was published on the day of
Israel's tenth anniversary by Hill and Lang. Her "Israel Today"
attracted such wide attention that she was invited by former
President Harry S. Truman personally to present a copy of the
volume to the Truman Library in Independence, Mo. The photo-
graph shows President Truman and Miss Gruber exchanging

In either case, choosing or
finding the kind of job you

set aside for you," the JVS
states.

GENEVA, (JTA)—The devel-

Poland has been far more rapid
than originally anticipated, it
was revealed here in a report
on the first four months of the
ORT's new program in that
country.
The first ORT courses were
opened last December in Wro-
claw for Jews repatriated from
the Soviet Union. By April, the

ROME, (JTA)—The Federal
Council of Italian Evangelical
Churches, a Protestant body, re-
quested the Italian government
to give full and equal treat-
ment for all religions. The
Council, noting that religious
freedom in this country was
threatened by restrictive regu-
lations left over from the Mus-
solini regime, said that the
present government had failed
to carry out in full the constitu-
tional guarantees of full and
free equality of religion.

A preamble to a national
code of practice for Jewish
religious schools has been
worked out and will be sub-
mitted to school boards and
community agencies for Jew-
ish education throughout the
country for consideration and
adoption. The preamble, Lown
said, outlines the basic respon-
sibilities and rights of teach-
ing staffs.
The conference heard a pro-
gress report on the National
Study of Jewish Education,
submitted by Drs. A. P. School-
man and U. Z. Engelman. Two
major findings- were discussed:
the attitudes of children at-
tending Jewish schools, and
the forms of sponsorship in
Jewish education. The national
study examined 11,550 chil-
dren in 24 communities by
means of questionnaires ad-
ministered in classrooms, and
the major result revealed thus
far is that the children, in
substantial majority, approve
of, and like the Jewish schools
they are attending.
The study also indicated
that the congregation - spon-
sored school now constitutes
the predominant majority in
Jewish education. In the com-
munities studied, 85 percent
of all children enrolled in Jew-
ish schools of any type were
attending schools under the
auspices of individual congre-
gations.

Michael A. Stavitsky, New-
ark, was elected president a
the Association; Sen. Herbert
H. Lehman, honorary presi-
den t; Philip W. Lawn, Boston,

ernors; Samuel Daroff, Phila-

visory committee. and Joseph
I. Sachs, New Haven, treas-
urer.
