Shaarey Zedek Gives Israel Trip
to Sonenklar Cantor 25 Years

A trip to Israel in recognition
of his 25 years of service to
Cong. Shaarey Zedek will be
presented to Cantor Jacob H.
Sonenklar at a testimonial din-
ner in his honor this Sunday,
in the synagogue social hall.
The ticket will be presented
to the cantor by Louis Berry,
president of the congregation.
The trip, to be made during
Israel's 10th anniversary year,
has another meaning to Cantor
Sonenklar.
It will mark a reunion with
his 72-year-old brother, now in
Israel, from whom he has been
separated for 35 years.
Samuel J. Benavie, chairman
of the Sonenklar 25th anniver-
sary committee, will preside at
the banquet. Rabbi Morris Adler
will be the principal speaker,
and Berry will extend greetings
for the membership.
A string ensemble, headed
by Zinovi Bistritzky, and the
augmented Shaarey Zedek
Choir, directed by Dan Froh-
man, will present a musical
program.
Cantor Sonenklar, born in
Austria, came to this country
in 1922, and served Cong. An-
she Emes in Chicago for 10
years before he began his long
career at Shaarey Zedek in
1932.
He showed ability even as a
youngster, and at the age -of
seven he already assisted his
cantor. His reputation spread,
and when he was only 10, he
had attained some prominence
throughout the Jewish com-
munities of Austria.
Under the tutelage of Cantor
Weinman, of Tarnow, Poland,
he was trained as a cantor, and,
at the age of 19, he went to
Vienna as soloist with the Vi-
enne Mendelssohn Manner Ge-
sang Verein.
Here, he studied operatic
music, and received a scholar-
