LZO Memorial
to Honor Three
WASHINGTON (JTA)—The
State Department announced
that Bernard Katzen, special
consultant to Secretary Dulles,
has been asked to proceed to
Israel to observe the program
for the expenditure of certain
Rinds in Israeli currency
which have accrued to the
United States as a result of
the operation of the informa-
tional media guaranty pro-
gram in Israel.
Some time ago Katzen was
sent by Dulles on an earlier
mission to Israel for the pur-
pose of recommending proj-
ects for which these funds
might be expended to further
the common interest of the
United States and Israel. Upon
completion of the mission, Kat-
zen reported to Secretary
A memorial program in
tribute to three late leaders of
the Labor Zionist Movement
will • be held at 12:30 p.m.,
Sunday, in the Hayim Green-
berg Center, 19161 Schaefer.
Honors will be accorded to
Nathan Korn, Morris Leibowitz
and Max Pfefferberg by mem-
bers of the Farband City Com-
mittee, Farband Branch 114,
Poale Zion Branch 3 and the
United Jewish Folk Schools.
The program will initiate a
project to plant a grove of
1,000 or more trees in Mr.
Korn's memory. Within the
grove, there also will be separ-
ate gardens planted for Mr.
Leibowitz and Mr. Pfefferberg.
The project, announced by
Morris Lieberman, chairman of
the administrative committee,
Harry Schumer, chairman, Far-
band City Committee, and
Sandford Goldberg, chairman,
Labor Zionist Council, is being
conducted in cooperation with
the Jewish National Fund.
All members of the IZO,
members of the families and
friends are invited to partici-
pate in the memorial service.
Dulles and made certain "rec-
ommendations for a number
of educational, scientific and
cultural projects.
These recommendations were
accepted by the Department
of State. The necessary appro-
priation was authorized by
Congress although subsequent-
ly members of Congress ques-
tioned the manner in which
Katzen operated and charged
him with working for political
ends. As a result of the furor
in Congress the informational
media program from which
Israel had benefitted was tem-
porarily suspended for an in-
vestigation.
The State Department said
the American Embassy in Is-
rael was currently engaged in
the implementation of the rec-
ommended projects. Mr. Kat-
zen will remain in Israel
about three weeks. He will
then submit his observations
and comments to the State De-
partment in Washington.
