Deny Reports of Mass Conversion
of Japanese to Jewish Religion

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Gustav
Stern, New York communal
leader, who just returned from
Japan where he was received by
Prince Mikasa, declared that
there is "a small group of
Japanese itellectuals who are
intensely interested in Juda-
ism and Israel," but described
as "exaggerated and unfounded
recent reports of large-scale
conversions of Japanese to
Judaism."
Stern reported that he had
discussed the question of the
alleged mass conversion of
Japanese to Judaism with Prince
Mikasa, youngest brother of
the Emporor, during an ex-
1-,:s.n‘:1P(-1 visit with the Prince in
Tokyo last month. Prince Mi-
kasa, himself a serious student
of Jewish religion and history,

Mr. Stern said, confirmed "my
findings that no mass conver-
sions of Japense to Judaism
have taken place as was widely
reported in the general and
Jewish press."
Reporting on the status of the
Jewish community in Japan,
Stern stated that "the Jewish
community consists mainly of
American and European Jews
who live in Tokyo. Right after
the war, they bought an estate
in Tokyo and with the help of
the National Jewish Welfare
Board built on this estate a
Synagogue. Today, the Jewish
community in Tokyo functions
very well even if it is small in
numbers.

Uncover Ancient
Farms in Negev

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The
discovery of evidence of a
system of Jewish agriculture
in the central and southern
Negev as long as 3,000 years
ago was announced here. Some
of the finds were located 20
miles south of Beersheba.
Previously, it had been be-
lieved that the Nabateans, dat-
ing back some 2,500 years,
were the oldest people to have
farmed what is now a desert
region. Prof. Evenari believes
that the Nabatean cities dis-
covered in the Negev were ac-
tually built on the ruins of
older Jewish settlements. His
theory contradicts that of an-
other famous Negev explorer,
Prof. Nelson Glueck, president
of Hebrew Union College-Jew-
ish Institute of Religion in Cin-
cinnati and archaelogist, who
laid open many Biblical secrets
in Palestine in the past few
decades.
The Hebrew University team
discovered traces of ancient
terraces, canals and houses
which is placed back into the
ninth century before the Com-
mon Era in history, a period
going back in time from King
Uziahu to the iron age. Chron-
icles states that King Uziahu
built canals and cisterns in the
desert. The ancient Jewish
farmers apparently depended on
flood waters stored in reservoirs
and cisterns.
