Hitler-Hailing
Wrestlers Forced
to Halt Theii-Act

ATLANTA (JTA). — A ris-
ing tide of viewer protest
against a weekly "Live Atlanta
Wrestling" program on WLWA
local television station, brought
an end this week to a per-
formance by two of the groaners
in which they gave Nazi sa-
lutes and shouted "Heil Hitler."
It was a routine procedure for
one member of the term, os-
tensibly made up of two
Germans, to announce: "We are
Germans. We are a master
race. We don't want to stay in
America where we receive un-
fair decisions."
Norman Shavin, TV-radio
editor of the Altanta Journal,
published a comment from
Howard Haire, secretary of the
Atlanta Athletic Commission,
who said the wrestlers' act was
designed to make people hate
them but there was nothing in
rules for professional wrestling
against the act He added he
thought the two wrestlers were
"just a couple of Tenessee hill-
billies."
Karl Schoenbach, West
German consul in Atlanta, said
he met with one of the "Ger-
man" wrestlers and urged him
to stop his act. Schoenbach said
the wrestler, who couldn't speak
a word of German, said "he was
doing it just for fun." The
consul said that "if there were
any legal way to stop this, we
would take it up immediately."
When complaints reached
Howard Rowe, promotion
manager for the station, he
called in Paul Jones and Don
McIntyre, promoters of the pro-
gram, who agreed that the pro-
Nazi demonstrations were in bad
taste. The promoters agreed
also to halt the act.
