Friday, May 30, 1958 — THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS-24 Many Jewries Endangered by World Crises Ben-Gurion Insists on Free Access to the Holy Places been requested to send a full report on the Mt. Scopus affray.) Col. Flint, a resident of Outremont, suburb of Montreal, and a veteran of the Korean war, was badly wounded 22 months ago by a mine explosion on Mt. Scopus. He had only re- cently signed for his third year with the UN truce mission here. According to the Israeli mili- tary spokesman, a police patrol of the regular Mt. Scopus garrison came under heavy Jordanian fire directed from the woods adjoining the demili- tarized zone as the patrol passed through the Botanical Gardens area, The exchange of fire continued for two hours during which two of the police- men were wounded. At least fOur more policemen were wounded in attempts by a rescuing force to evacuate them from the line of fire but the rescue attempt failed as Jordanians garrisoned in the Augusta Viet or i a Hospital joined in the shooting. A UN call for a cease-fire at 3:30 p.m., local time, was spurned by the Jordanians. It was then that Col. Flint made his gallant, single-handed at- tempt to reach the wounded men. The United Nations truce authorities finally succeeded in getting Jordanian agree- ment to a cease-fire some six hours after the first men were wounded. Ambulances . were in readiness at the Mandelbaum Gate to receive the wounded men and rush them to hospital as soon as they .were evacuated from the mountain top. Israeli sources described the incident as one of the most serious involving Mt. Scopus since the War of Liberation. They regarded with utmost seriousness the unprecedented fact that the Arabs maintained their fire for six hours, pre- venting removal of the wound- ed, even though they knew that one of the wounded men was a United Nations official and that his life and that of the wounded Israeli policemen de- pended on their receiving prompt medical aid, for lack of which they died. (Continued from Page 1) Services for Col. Flint were held Tuesday afternoon in Jerusalem's St. Andrew's Church. An informal meeting Tues- day failed to reach an agree- ment on procedure for a joint investigation of the Mt. Scopus affray. As a result, it appeared likely that two and possibly three separate investigations would be held. Israel and Jordan, it is now believed, will conduct their own investigations and the UN will conduct a third probe on both sides of the demarcation line. Singing fascist hymns, gangs of hoodlums invaded the district, where most of Rome's Jews live, shouting "Death to the Jews." Jews went into action im- mediately, counter-attacking the fascists. Police reserves soon arrived to back up the defend- ers, and the fascists were routed. During the night, however, after the police patrols had 'retired, other fascists threw paint on a memorial commem- orating the martydom of the Jews exterminated in the Ardea- tine Cave massarces. Among the flowers adorning the memorial, the fascists planted a bludgeon, symbol of violence. When police came to remove the bludgeon and the paint-splattered flowers, new fights broke out. A warning that the Jews of Rome might take reprisals in the event of further attacks was issued Sunday by Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff. The warnings came after the Chief Rabbi had met in an emergency session with the Rome Jewish Commnity Council and representatives of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities. "Our patience has limits," the Chief Rabbi .._ declared. "It is hard to restrain. all initiative of the Jewish population which wants to react to fascist provo- cations." attackers had been identified and that the results of the police -investigation will be turned over to the judiciary authorities for possible prosecution. News- papers throughout the country are printing full reports of the attacks and the Jewish self- defense actions, some of the publications devoting full pages to these reports. Osservatore Romano, organ of the Vatican, on Tuesday sharply condemned the week- end attacks on the Jewish quarter of Rome attempted by fascist youth following a poli- tical rally, declaring that "they are offensive to the civil and Christian conscience of Rome and Italy." The Journal recalled the Va- tican's denunciation of racial intolerance in America in Sep- tember 1956 and renewed its advocacy of suspension of civil and political rights for those found .guilty of such crimes. Rabbi Stollman Received by B-G; Gets Assurances on Religious Freedoms JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Pre- mier David Ben-Gurion told a delegation of Orthodox rabbis from the United States that there will be no "religious coer: cion" in Israel. The delegation was led by Rabbi Isaac Stoll- man of Detroit, president of the Religious Zionists of America. The Premier stated that Is- rael could not afford the lux- ury of disunity and a national debate on religious matters until the population had at least doubled. He deprecated the position of many extrem- ists and scored them as "swearers." It is possible, he added, that there in Jerusalem, is not the place for a mixed swimming pool — an issue which has aroused Orthodox Jews in and outside of Israel — but the government is not empowered to intervene.
