attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7,
1941. . . . A lot of boys died
that day . . . Detroiter Harold
Eli Shiffman was a radioman
1st class, stationed on the
battleship U.S.S. Arizona when
it received its mortal wounds
at Pearl Harbor . . . He died
along with 1,102 of his ship-
mates as the Japanese bombers
swept in at 7:55 a.m.

FOR HIS FAMILY and friends,
Harold's death was never final
. . . He had neither a funeral
Service nor a eulogy written
for him and him alone, since
funeral services are not held
for one "Missing in Action"
. . . His tomb for over 16 years
has been the ship's rusting
rotting hulk, but our govern-
ment has never forgotten
Repeated attempts have been
made to probe the shattered
hull but repairs were hopeless.

RECENTLY, A PACIFIC War
Memorial Commission was
created with a goal of $500,000
to make the Arizona a perman-
ent and safe memorial for all
to visit and pay their respects
. . . When first announced this
year, Harold's niece, Mrs.
George Gilbert, contacted all
members of the family and his
dear friend, Sam Blechman .. .
A total of $175 was sent to the
Commission in . memory of
Harold and his shipmates.
