Scopus Incident 'Most Serious', Jews Endangered by French Crisis; Fascists Fou ht by Rome wry Numerous crises affecting many areas throughout the world are seriously endangering the positions of Jewish communities. The new incident on Mount Scopus, in the Jerusalem demilitarized area that has won status as Israel territory under United Nations control, is greatly aggravating the Israeli situation. Conditions in Lebanon, which has become a center of struggle between contending Arab forces, also is affecting Israel, due to efforts by Arab politicians to convert the issue into an ant;-Israeli outburst by their attempts to unify Arabs on a platform in opposition to Israel. The French crisis also is affecting Jewish communities. The position of the 300,000 Jews in France is endangered and the 400,000 Jews in North African communities live in constant fear of attacks by Arabs. There is concern lest French-Israeli amity may be affected by the new crisis. Elections in Italy were the occasions for a revival of fascist hoodlum- ism and an attempt by hooligans to attack the Rome Jewish quarter. The Jews fought and repulsed the hoodlums. Israel Bond Campaign Viewed as Imperative Duty in Grave Period The current Israel Bond Drive, renewed locally upon the completion of the Allied Jewish Campaign, is spurred now as one of the most vital factors in giving strength to the most effective democracy in the entire Middle East—Israel. To keep Israel economically strong, the Bond drive must be a greater success than ever. it is pointed out. Bond dollars assist in the industrial development of the Jewish State. Two major events, sponsored by the Israel Bond Organization, are on the June calendar: the Women's Division affair planned for Colonel Shoshana Gershom, the commanding officer of the Women's Army (CHEN) of Israel; and the dinner on June 11, to be addressed by Yaacov Tsur, Israel's Ambassador to France. Detroit Jewry is called upon to act promptly in lend- ing its support to these two events and in supporting the Israel Bond Drive. Colonel George Flint Direct JTA Teletype Wires to The Jewish News JERUSALEM—A full-scale United Nations investigation of the Mount Scopus battle Monday which cost the lives of Lt. Col. George Flint, UN chairman of the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission and four Israeli police began Tuesday. The anticipated Jordan charge that Israelis started the shooting Monday and that Col. Flint was killed by Israel bullets was published in the Jordan press Tuesday. Israel officials have reported that the UN official was hit when he sought to extricate four wounded Israelis and that all five perished because Jordan gunfire prevented help from reaching them in time. United Nations sources disclosed that Col. Flint was in touch by walkie talkie with UN headquarters in Jerusalem's No Man's Land almost to the moment he was struck down by gunfire. However, UN officials refused to disclose the content of Col. Flint's walkie talkie report, contending that the information was a basic part of the official investigation. Jordan newspapers asserted that the UN official's last statement via the walkie talkie equipment was that he was being fired upon from the Israel side. United Nations sources did deny the Jordanian claim that the entire incident took place near the Issawia village which the Jordanians asserted was attacked by Israel. The UN confirmed that Col. Flint and the four police fell in an area known as "Shulamit's Garden" which is part of the abandoned Hebrew University Botanical Garden on Mount Scopus. According to the 1948 Scopus demilitarization agreement signed by both Jordan and Israel, the area is in the Israel sector. Jordan in recent weeks renewed claims to the area, Israel sources said. said, and when an Israel patrol entered the disputed area Monday—an area patrolled by since 1948—the Jordanians apparently decided to assert their claim by force and opened fire on the patrol. According to the Mixed. Armistice Agreement, Mount Scopus is under the special jurisdiction of the MAC chairman acting as special 'representative for Mount Scopus and not under the full MAC. Israel officials have objected to an investigation by the full armistice commission and an informal meeting was held Tuesday morning to discuss the nature and arrangements for the investigation. UN officials and repre- sentatives of Israel and Jordan participated. Continued on Page 24 On this Memorial Day, we pay honor to those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms . . .
