At a recent dinner party, Mr.
and Mrs. Sol Penn, of Marlowe
Ave., announced the engage-
ment of their daughter, Helene
Doris, to Merton J. Robbins, son
of Mr. George Robbins, of Nor-
wood Ave., Oak Park, and the
late Mrs. Ann Robbins. A Jan. 3
wedding is being planned.
Mumford Senior Elected
to Retailing Club Office
Mumford High School senior
James Gottfurcht was recently
elected vice-president in charge
of the Central Region of the
Distributive Education Club of
America, a national organiza-
tion of retailing students.
James, son of Mr. Leo Gott
furcht, of 17133 Roselawn, was
voted into office at the na-
tional convention of DECA in
Columbus, 0. The region is
comopsed of 13 Midwestern
states.
The graduating senior will
attend a special officer's train-
ing course next month in
Washington, D.C., to familiar-
ize him with his duties of
coordinating activities between
national, regional and state
organizations.

With senior activities in full
swing, anxious thespians are
busy rehearsing this semester's
senior play. Mike Aller, Gloria
Brown, Jane Kurtz, Sue Spert-
ner and Linda Tann will be
seen in "Five For Bad Luck,"
a one-act comedy by William
Carson. The production will be
viewed on June 5, during a sen-
ior meeting.
Following graduation on June
18, the Stardust Fantasy, Mum-
ford's senior prom, will culmi-
nate 12A functions. The Foun-
tain Ballroom of the Masonic
Temple will provide the setting
as Mumfordites swirl to the mu-
sic of Dave Martin and his Or-
chestra.

Bettie Schottenfels and Don-
ald Solomon, 12A's, are recipi-
ents of the semi-annual Police
Youth Award. This award is
given to a senior boy and a girl
on the basis of scholarship,
leadership, character and citi-
zenship. Two students are chos-
en in each school by the ad-
ministration.

Facing Redford and U of D
this past, week, the boys' tennis
team is a strong contender for
the metropolitan championship.
Led by Paulo Silva, Brazilian
newcomer to the squad, the var-
sity crew consists of Alan Bur-
stein, Mel Saperstein, Tom War-
shaw, Gary Kukes, Don Kelber
and Dave Rose.

Pollack, R i c h a r d Karpinsky,
Norman Levy, Bob Hendelson,
and Harold Waller took top
honors in a state-wide math con-
test. Sue Castleman and Bob
Denison won scholarship
awards.

"Thanks for the memories"
was the theme Saturday night
in the Fountain Room of the
Masonic Temple, as 1,000 alum-
ni and friends of Central High
gathered to commemorate the
100th anniversary of Michigan's
oldest public high school. The
alumni list read like a "Who's
Who" in Detroit.
Miss Bertha M. Robinson,
Central's principal, centennial
director, pointed out that Cen-
tral's history is a story of all
students, teachers, and educa-
tors.
Dr. Samuel M. Brownell, su-
perintendent of schools, said
Central must continue to make
each graduate proud of hiMself
and proud that he is a graduate
of that school.
Arthur L. McGrath spoke on
the Dimensions of a Century of
Secondary Education.
Leonard Kasle, '34, president
of the School Board, stressed
the need for our adjustments to
the new horizons and new de-
velopments that face us.
Dr. Harvey Merker, '05 spoke
of the student era when Our
Hearts Were Young and Gay;
Leonard Simons, '21 kept the
audience in laughter by re-
counting incidents in the Roar-
ing Twenties; and Dr. Mel J.
Ravitz, '42, discussed the Fabu-
lous Forties and the Transitions
made by the young people of
those days—from depression to
war time.
Dick Frankensteen, '26. pre-
sented a musical skit, "Nostal-
"We listen today, for tomor-
row we speak." At a senior
meeting, first hour, May 14,
12A's selected this quote as
their class motto. The class
picked royal blue and white
as their colors. Plans were also
discussed and set for a Senior
Picnic, May 29, at Rouge Park.

Gompers AZA has now taken
the lead in the ,AZA baseball
league after trouncing Wise 7-6
last Sunday. Sparked by `Lites
Leslie Grosslight, Terry Gross-
light, Mike Beltzman, Mickey
Sisskind, Bob Cohen, Marshall
Schugar, Jimmie Wechsler, Bob
Levy and Sam Bernstein the
hopes are high for a first place
finish.

Hearty congratulations are
extended to Carol Johnson and
Charles Stevens, winners of the
Detroit Police Youth Awards.
They will receive their indivi-
dual awards at a dinner in their
honor May 22 at the Sheraton
Cadillac.

Baren who has recently been
awarded a year tuition scholar-
ship to Wayne State University,
presented by the Association of
Women Students. Stanley Wein-
garden also won a similar two-
year scholarship. Best of luck
for a most successful future.

The culmination of 100 years
of learning and a rich heritage
behind her, Central seemed to
come alive Saturday evening at
the Centennial Alumni Banquet
in the Fountain Room of Ma-
sonic Temple. From "Down on
Miami Avenue in 1958" to "Up
on Tuxedo Avenue in 1958,"
alumni and their friends and
family relived their school days
once again. A part of the enter-
tainment was furnished by the
following grads of June, 1958:
Hedy Cohen, Carole Lash, Tyn-
etta Nelson, Beverly Schwartz,
Margaret Smith, Sally Masser-
man, Steve Chennault, Mark
Eichner, Leslie Grosslight, Mar-
ty Peitz, Charles Stevens, Terry
Grosslight. The evening was one
long to be remembered by all
those ever connected with Cen-
tral High School.
