Shavuot, the season which
marks the period when Moses
received the law at Sinai, will
be observed in our commun-
ity, beginning Saturday eve-
ning.
The festival will continue
in orthodox and conservative
congregation on Sunday and
at Yizkor services Monday,
while in reform congregations
Yizkor services will conclude
the holiday on Sunday.
Following is a schedule of
sabbath and Shavuot services
in our synagogues:
Cong. Bnai Moshe
Evening services Saturday
and Sunday begin at 8 p.m.,
with morning services sched-
uled Sunday at 8:45 a.m. and
Monday at 8:30 a.m. Rabbi
Moses Lehrman will preach
the sermons on "On the Thresh-
hold of a New Era in Bnai
Moshe" and "Creative Remem-
brance." Cantor David Katz-
man will chant the services.
Temple Israel
At 8:30 p.m. sabbath serv-
ices today, Dr. Leon Fram
will speak on "The Contro-
versy About Religion in the
State of Israel," the third in
a series of sermons on his
trip to the Jewish state. The
Bar Mitzvah of Steven Law-
rence Kishner will be ob-
served.
At 10:30 a.m. services Sat-
urday, Dr. Fram will speak
on "The Power of a Lan-
guage," when the closing ex-
ercises of the congregation's
Hebrew school will be
marked. Rabbi M. Robert
Syme, director of the school,
will award medals and cer-
tificates of honor.
Confirmation exercises will
be marked at 7:30 p.m., Sat-
urday, and Shavuot morning
services will be held at 10:30 -
a.m., Sunday.
Cong. Bnai David
Sabbath services will be
held at the old building and
the new Southfield synagogue
at 7:30 p.m., today, and at
8:45 a.m., Saturday. Rabbi
Hayim Donin and Cantor Hy-

man J. Adler will officiate at
the Southfield site.
Shavuot services are planned
for 8:30 a.m., Sunday and Mon-
day, at the new building.
Rabbi Donin will preach, and
Canttor Adler will be joined
by the Bnai David Choir in
conducting the services.
Beth Abraham Synagogue
Sabbath services at 6:30
p.m., today, and at 8:45 a.m.,
Saturday, will be followed by
Shavuot services, planned for
7:45 p.m., Saturday to Monday,
and 8:30 a.m., Sunday and
Monday.
On the first day, Rabbi Is-
rael I. Halpern will preach
on "The Sin of Insufficient
Pride." At Monday services,
he will install and formally
introduce newly-elected offi-
cers of the congregation.
Cantor Shabtai Ackerman
and the synagogue choir will
chant the festival liturgy.
On three successive eve-
nings, beginning Saturday,
Rabbi Halpern will lecture on
the Book of Ruth from 7 to
7:45 p.m., in the main sanc-
tuary, preceding Shavuot wor-
ship.
Beth Aaron Synagogue
Annual Shavuot services will
be held at 7 p.m., Saturday,
and at 7 p.m. and 8:30 a.m.,
Sunday and Monday. Rabbi
Benjamin H. Gorrelick will
preach on "Torah, the Founda-
tion of Israel's Peoplehood"
and "Creative Memories."
Evergreen Congregation
Sabbath and Shavuot serv-
ices will be held at 9 a.m.,
Saturday, Sunday and Monday,
in the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Nachman Tevlo, 19130 Hunt-
ington. Yizkor services will be
held at 10:30 a.m., Monday.
Cong. Beth Shmuel
Sabbath and Shavuot serv-
ices will be held at '7:30 p.m.,
today through Monday, and at
9 a.m., Saturday to Monday.
Rabbi Joseph Rabinowitz will
officiate and preach the ser-
mons.
Adas Shalom Synagogue
Sabbath services are planned

Synagogues, Veterans Groups Plan
Annual Memorial Day Services

Congregations and veterans
organizations will join in pay-
ing solemn tribute to our na-
tion's war dead at special pro-
grams planned for next week-
end, beginning with Memorial
Day on May 30.

The annual memorial service
at Beth El Memorial Park,
held jointly by Temples Beth
El, Israel and Emanu-El, will
take place at 11 a.m., May 30.
Rabbi M. Robert Syme will
preach on "When Memories
Are a Blessing." The Beth El
Choir, directed by Jason H.
Tickton, will render the music.
At 10:30 a.m., on May 30,
members of the Oak Park Post
of the Jewish War Veterans
will conduct memorial services
for their deceased comrades.
The ceremonies, to be held at
the Oak Park City Hall, will
feature the participation of
city officials, clergymen of all
faiths, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts
and the Oak Park High School
Band.
Members of the Post also
will participate in services to
be held at Machpelah Ceme-
tery at 11 a.m., June 1. This
program, a tribute to Jewish
war dead, will feature the
participation of all JWV units.
Cong. Bnai Moshe will join
with the JWV's Lt. Bloch-
Gen. Rose Post in honoring de-
parted servicemen at memorial
services planned for 12 noon,
Memorial Da at Oakviem

Cemetery. Boy Scout Troop 23
will participate in the cere-
monies.
Rabbi Moses Lehrman, Ju-
lius Reznik, - vice-president of
the synagogue, and David
Goodstein, Post commander,
will deliver addresses, and Can-
tor David Katzman will chant
psalms appropriate to the oc-
casion. Graves of servicemen
will be decorated.
Julius Rosenwald Post of the
American Legion will hold its
Memorial Day services on Sun-
day, following a breakfast
gathering at 9:30 a.m., at
George's Delicatessen.
The group will reassemble
at 11 a.m., at Machpelah Cem-
etery, when services in Eng-
lish and Hebrew will be read.
The Post firing squad and bu-
gle corps will participate.
A similar ceremony is
planned for 1:30 p.m., at
Chesed shel Emes Cemetery.
Both services will be conducted
at the soldier section of the
cemeteries. The community is
invited to attend both.
Any information pertaining
to the Rosenwald Memorial
Day services may he obtained
from Joseph Shapiro, adjutant,

The 34th annual Memorial
Day exercises at Clover Hill
Park Cemetery, 14 Mile East
of Woodward, will take place at
1 a.m., May 30, when Rabbi
Morris Adler will speak on "To

for 6 p.m., today, and at 8:45
a.m., Saturday, when the Bar
Mitzvahs of Jay Michael Coop-
ersmith and Stephen David
Lichter will be observed. Rabbi
Jacob E. Segal will officiate
and preach the sermon, and
Cantor Nicholas Fenakel will
chant the liturgy.
Shavuot will be observed at
7:30 p.m., Saturday, and at
8:30 a.m., Sunday and Monday.
Rabbi Segal and Cantor Fen-
akel again will officiate.
Cong. Beth Joseph
Sabbath services will be held
at 7:30 p.m. today, and at 9
a.m., Saturday, when Rev.
Manuel Neiman will speak on
"The Book of Ruth." The Bar
Mitzvah of Alan Michael Vosko
will be observed.
Temple Beth Jacob, Pontiac
Services at 8:30 p.m. today
will be devoted to the con-
firmation class. At the "Con-
secration Service for Confirm-
ands," as it is called, Rabbi
Nathan Hirschfield will preach
on "Choose a Teacher."
Cong. Gemiluth Chassodim
Sabbath services at 7:30 p.m.,
today, and at 9 a.m., Saturday.
Shavuot services will be held
at 7:30 p.m., each evening, and
at 8:45 a.m., mornings. Rabbi
Joel J. Litke will preach on
"A People Under Oath" and
"The Uninterrupted V o ic e."
Alex Roberg will chant the
liturgy.
The traditional congrega-
tional Shavuot Lernen is
planned at 10 p.m., Saturday,
in the home of Mr. and Mrs.
David Hess, 4226 Webb. Mor-
itz Marx is in charge of ar-
rangements.
Cong. Shaarey Zedek
Sabbath and Shavuot serv-
ices will be held at 6 p.m., to-
day through Sunday, and at
8:45 a.m., Saturday to Monday.
Rabbi Morris Adler will preach
the sermons, and Cantors Ha-
cob H. Sonenklar and ReUven
Frankel, together with the
choir directed by Dan Froh-
man, will chant the services.
Graduation exercises of the
high school department, the
12th grade of the religious
school, will be celebrated at
Saturday morning services.
Cong. Beth Yehudah
Rabbi Joshua Spiro will offi-
ciate and preach the sermons
at all services, which are sched-
uled for 7:45 p.m., today to
Monday, and at 9 a.m., Satur-
day to Monday.
Temple Beth El
At 8:30 p.m. services today,
the annual graduation from
the high school department
and the consecration service
for confirmands will be held.
Dr. Richard C. Hertz will
preach on "What It Takes to
Be a Jew."
At 11:15 a.m. services Satur-
day, Rabbi David A. Baylinson
will speak on "Moses: Prophet
or Priest."
Cong. Shomrey Emunah
Rabbi Sholem Flair will
preach the sermon on "Re-
ceiving the Torah" at 10:30
a.m. Yizkor services Mon-
day. All other services for
the sabbath and Shavuot will
be held at '7:35 p.m. and at
9 a.m.
Downtown Synagogue
Yizkor services will be held
every half hour from 9 a.m. to
1 p.m. on Monday, on the third
floor of the 1VIalcomson Bldg.,
1217 Griswold. Rev. Morris
Cooper will officiate.
Young Israel of NW Detroit
Sabbath services at 7:35 p.m.,
today, and at 9 a.m., Saturday.
Shavuot evening services are
planned for 8:20 p.m., followed
by the traditional holiday class,
and at 9 a.m. Dr. Leo Y. Gold-
man will speak on "Life and
Religion" and "The Eternity
