Beth Abraham
Dedication
Begins Today

Dr. Leon D. Stitskin of Yeshi-
vah University will officially
begin the dedication ceremo-
nies of Cong. Beth Abraham
with a dedication lecture, "A
Definition of Judaism," at 8:30
p.m., today.
Saturday is dedication sab-
bath at the synagogue, with
Rabbi Israel I. Halpern preach-
ing on "Blessed be Dedica-
tions." Also on Saturday, a
highlight of the dedication cere-
monies will take place at 8:30
p.m. when a youth panel of
University students will discuss
various topics.
Sol Blumenfeld will talk on
"The Role of the Day Schools,"
Larry Berkower on "The Place
of the Jewish Intellectual;" S.
Dorfman on 'The Synagogue's
Position" and Hershell Schlus-
sel on 'Israel and the Exile."
Dr. Max Kapustin will serve as
moderator. A m'laveh malkeh
buffet supper will be served.
On Sunday, at 1:30 p.m., the
actual dedication will take place
at the synagogue. On Monday
a dedication dinner-dance will
be held at 6 p.m. and will fea-
ture Eli Mintz, the "Uncle Da-
vid," of the TV show, "The
Goldbergs."

committee are Harold Kukes,
Leonard R. Farber, Meyer Zol-
kower, Philip Rosenzweig, Irv-
ing Schlussel, Leo Polk, Hy
Crystal, Allen Vinocur, Samuel

Merkaz Annual Meeting
Planned for Thursday

The annual meeting of the
Merkaz, the lay organization of
traditional Jewish leaders, will
be held at 8:30 p.m., Thursday,
at Young Israel of Detroit, on
Dexter Blvd.
A feature of the meeting
will be the yearly report of
David J. Cohen, president.

Cantor Katzman to Get Honors
for 20 Years with Bnai Moshe

Cantor David Katzman, who
will have served 20 years as
hazzan of Cdng. Bnai Moshe at
the end of his term in July,
will be honored by members of
the synagogue and his friends
in Detroit at festivities planned
for this weekend.

who will be leaving for Califor-
nia after the
cantor's retire-
ment in two

On Sunday, members of the
congregation will tender the
couple a farewell testimonial
dinner, beginning with a cock-
tail party at 6 p.m., in the
social hall.
Addresses will be delivered
by Rabbi Moses Lehrman and
Harry Gunsberg, president. Eu-
gene Weiss, general chairman,
advises that Alfred Deutsch will
serve as toastmaster.
Adolph Deutsch and Joseph
Gunsberg are honorary chair-
men of the testimonial event.
Among the guests who will
be present at the weekend fes-
tivities are Cantor and Mrs. Na-
than Katzman, the couple's son
and daughter-in-law, of Los An-
geles.
The younger Cantor Katz-
man, eminent in his own right,
is a past president of the West
Coast Region of the Cantor's
Assembly of America and is a
member of its national council.

He is cantor of Temple Beth
El, one of the largest conserva-
tive congregations on the West
Coast.
Mrs. Katzman, the former
Grace Klein, is also a former
Detroiter, and is the niece of
the late Joseph and Ben Miller,
well-known Detroiters.
Besides Nathan, Cantor and
Mrs. Katzman have three other
sons and a daughter.

JUDAH GOLDIN, noted Jew-
ish theological scholar, has been
appointed to the Yale Univer-
sity faculty as Professor of Jew-
ish Studies, effective July I.
