David Safran Selected Chairman of
Israel Bondholders Meeting May 18
David Safran, who has been
acting as chairman of the De-
troit Israel Bond steering com-
mittee, will serve as chairman
of the annual Israel Bondhold-
ers meeting, set for May 18, in
the Statler Hotel, it was an-
nounced by Abe Kasle, Detroit
Israel Bond Committee chair-
man.
Philip Stollman, head of the
Israel Bond Religious Council,
will lead a special panel for
congregations and associated
bodies, during the morning ses-
sion. Mrs. Joshua Sperka, Miz-
rachi women's leader, will rep-
resent the Israel Bond Women's
Division in this category.
An organizational panel will
be chaired by Judge Victor
Baum, vice-president elect of
Detroit Farband Branch 529.
The women in this group will
be represented by a Hadassah
participant.
According to SafrAn, almost
$336,000,000 in Israel Bonds
have been sold since the in-
ception of the drive in 1951,
with over 88,500,000 accredited
to the Detroit area.
The meeting, to be addressed
by national leaders, is open to
all Israel Bondholders. It will
provide a factual report on the
progress of investment dollars
in Israel. No Bond solicitations
will be made at the meeting,
which begins at 10 a.m.
ZOD Sets Dinner as Israel Tribute
As part of an extensive, year-
long program of events de-
signed to commemorate the
celebration of Israel's 10th an-
niversary, the Zionist Organiza-
tion of Detroit is sponsoring a
birthday dinner on June 10, at
Holiday Manor.
According to Dr. Bernard
Weston, chairman of the din-
ner committee, a cocktail hour
will precede the dinner at 7
p.m. Entertainment will include
a presentation of Israeli folk
music by Cherat Hazomir, a
choral group of young Israeli
and American students, under
the direction of Shimon Gewirtz,
who will offer additional num-
bers accompanied by his wife,
Liana.

in Yiddish, Hebrew
NEW YORK (JTA)—Three
prizes for the best literary works
in Yiddish and in Hebrew that
appeared in 1957 were an-
nounced by the Louis LaMed
Foundation. Each prize is worth
$500.
One Yiddish prize—for poet-
ry—was divided between Aaron
Glantz-Leyeles and Aaron Zeit-

Yiddish prize
for short sto-
ries went to
Rachel K o r n.
The winner of
the Hebrew
prize is Dr. S.
Federbush for
a book on the
Talmud.
The sum of
$500, original-
LaMed ly intended for
another Hebrew prize will be
used for the publication of a
Hebrew book to be recommend-
ed by the Hebrew Pen Club.
The jury consisted of Leibush
Lerer, noted Jewish educator;
Abraham Tabachnick, essayist
and poet; and M. Feinstein, He-
brew educator and poet. Dr. S.
Margoshes is chairman of the
LaMed Foundation.
The LaMed Foundation is
sponsored by Detroiter Louis
LaMed, prominet philanthropist
and local cultural leader, who
also created the LaMed Profes-
sorship at Wayne State Univer-
sity and was instrumental in
establishing a department of
Semitic languages and literature
at that university.
