at a reception in the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Morris L. Schaver
last Saturday evening.
In a ceremonial presentation
Rena Harold, Faigele Hearshen,
Neri Berke and Gary Mark, rep-
resenting the student body of
the United Jewish Folk School,
turned over to Col. Yoffe a scroll
extending congratulations and
birthday greetings to- the chil-
dren of Israel on the occasion
of that country's tenth anni-
versary.
Col. Yoffe, who on his return
home will assume the position
of commander-in-chief of the
Southern Command of the Israel
Army, served as head of the
famous 9th Brigade during the
Sinai campaign. This division,
which gained renown as the
Golani Brigade, was responsible
for the capture of the Egyptian
southern defense blocking the
passageway through the Straits
of Tiran to Elath on the Gulf
of Aqaba.
Classed as one of Israel's best
field officers, Col. Yoffe began
his military career at the age
of 17 as a member of Haganah,
the Jewish defense force. Later
he served in the well known
Wingate Brigade during the
British Mandate in Palestine.
Col. Yoffe was a personal friend
and trusted aide to General
Orde Wingate, who was sent to
Palestine by the British gov-
ernment to train a Jewish vol-
unteer army.
When he was in Israel on his
two visits, Brig. Gen. S. L. A.
Marshall, chief editorial writer
of the Detroit News, befriended
Col. Yoffe and they conferred
during the latter's visit here.
At the gathering at the Scha-
ver home, Col. Yoffe was the
life of the party. He sang He-
brew songs, joined in group
singing and displayed the spirit
that reportedly overwhelms Is-
raelis in their enthusiasm for
life and action.
"The Singing Colonel" is the
way he was referred to after the
warmly sociable evening at
which he was welcomed to De-
troit.
