Tablet in N. Y. Honors Memory
of Imber, `Hatikvah' Author
NEW YORK (JTA)—A mem-
orial bronze tablet honoring
Naftali Herz Imber, author of
the Hatikvah, the Israel na-
tional anthem, was unveiled last
Friday morning on the building
where the Hebrew poet died,
on New York's Lower East
Side. Top civic and Jewish com-
munal leaders will participate
is the ceremony.
Imber, who died in 1909,
spent the last 17 years of his
life in the United States after
years of wandering in Eastern
Europe, England and the Mid-
dle East. The poem, which was
adopted as Israel's national an-
them following its re-establish-
ment as an independent nation
in 1948, was written by Imber
at the age of twenty-two. For
more than a generation before
the founding of Israel, Hatikvah
was the official anthem of the
World Zionist movement.
Consul-General Simcha Pratt
of the State of Israel was one
of the leading participants in
the ceremony honoring Imber.

rael "has made our growth
easier, quicker and more effec-
tive."
In opening the program,
Morris Lieberman, co-chair-
man of the Detroit Committee
for Israel's 10th Anniversary
Celebration, stated that Sun-
day's program was the first in
a series of year-long events to
mark the completion of the
Jewish state's first decade.
He called on Lt. Gov. Philip
A. Hart, Samuel J. Rhodes, pres-
ident of the Jewish Community
Council, and Hyman Safran,
vice-president of the Jewish
Welfare Federation, for greet-
ings.
Lt. Gov. Hart, speaking for
Gov. Williams who was attend-
ing a similar program at the
Polo Grounds in New York, said
that in certain areas the United
States would do well to copy the
progress of the 10-year-old state
of Israel.
"We might take a lesson,"
Hart said, "in learning how to
combine our military and scien-
tific progress with our social
welfare services. In Israel," he
added; "they have made great
gains in health and welfare
while still providing adequately
for their defense."
Rhodes, after speaking on Is-
rael's physical - achievements,
stressed the fact that the Jew-
ish state also has given a new
sense of dignity to Jews all
over the world.
In outlining what he consid-
ered Israel's three greatest ac-
complishnients, Safran listed
its "birth out of a calamity;
its survival against the on-
slaught of its enemies; and its
saving of the remnant of a
people."
The opening prayer was read
by Rabbi Israel I. Halpern, of
Beth Abraham Synagogue,
while leading in the singing of
the national anthems was Can-
tor Reuven Frankel, of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek.
Cantor Frankel also was fea-
tured in the second part of the
program which highlighted a
narrative pageant of Israel's
growth and progress during its
first decade.
The pageant, "Tumult of Cre-
ation," was written and pro-
duced by. Joseph Edelman, di-
rector of community relations
of the Jewish Community Coun-
cil, and presented Harry Gold-
stein, of radio, television and
stage prominence, in the role
of the narrator. Judy Dann, of
the Shaarey Zedek Youth
Group, also participated in the
narrative.
W oven intricately through
the plot of the pageant were
songs by Cantor Frankel, musi-
cal selections by a symphonic
ensemble, directed by Zinovi
Bistritzky, dances by Hashomer
Hatzair, together with rendi-
tions by Shimon and Ilana Ge-
wirtz who also played the gui-
tar and chalil.
Special recognition is given
to Detroit's own Emma Scha-
ver, who was at her very best
in singing the beautiful bal-
lads and spirited marching
songs which have become a
part of the new culture of
Israel.
Mrs. Philip Bernstein was in
charge of the ushers, composed
of Jewish teen-agers from all
groups in the community.
As early as 6 p.m: crowds
began gathering in the audi-
torium to assure themselves of
good vantage points from which
to watch this salute to Israel.
By the time the program had
started, every seat on the main
floor was taken. Soon the crowd
overflowed to the rear of the
auditorium where those lucky
enough were able to stand,
while others gathered in the
foyer to listen to the proceed-
ings over the auditorium's pub-
lic address system.
