Aguclah Replies to Ziprin Column
on Jerusalem Pool Demonstrations

In his syndicated column
which often appears in The
Jewish News, Nathan Ziprin
published the reply to a col-
umn he had previously written
decrying the demonstrations
currently being undertaken by
certain religious groups in Isra-
el against the construction of
a mixed (men and women)
swimming pool in Jerusalem.
The author of the letter is Rabbi
Morris Sherer, executive vice-
president of Agudath Israel of
America. Following are parts
of Rabbi Sherer's letter, as it
appeared in Ziprin's column:
"The opposition to the con-
struction of a mixed swimming
pool in Jerusalem does not stem
from 'ultra-extremists' as your
column implied. It is a fact that
opposition to the project has
united all religious forces in
Israel, including the Chief Rab-
binate, Agudath Israel and the
Mizrachi - Hapoel Hamizrachi.
This same unanimity exists in
the United States, where all
orthodox rabbinical and lay or-
ganizations have voiced their
strong objection to this new
project in Jerusalem.
"The struggle to stop the
erection of a mixed swimming
pool in Jerusalem has no rela-
tionship with the liberties of
irreligious citizen s, whose
rights to disbelieve you defend.
It stems from our own view
about the unique place that
Jerusalem has traditionally oc-
cupied in the hearts of our
people as a holy city, which
Jews throughout the world face
in moments of prayer. The Tal-

mud often places a special sanc-
tity on Jerusalem, which has
become a sacred symbol of our
faith.
"But all this theology, which
opens broader vistas, is' not
relevant to the mixed swim-
ming pool project. Regardless
of one's approach to this over-
all issue, every feeling Jew
should understand that Jeru-
salem has carved out for itself
an historical niche amongst the
world's cities, and this should
not be defiled. This is the quin-
tessence of our struggle."

Free Local Rabbi
Alter Arrest in
Israel Pool Issue

Among those detained by Is-
raeli police, during the recent
demonstrations b y orthodox
groups protesting the erection
of a mixed swimming pool in
Jerusalem, was Detroiter Rabbi
Moishe Weiswasser, son of Mrs.
Rose Weiswasser, of 11821 Ot-
sego.
Rabbi WeiSwasser, 22, a for-
mer student of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah, in, Detroit, was or-
dained in Israel just prior to
Passover, after a year and a half
of study in the Yeshivah at Bnei
Brak.
He was freed after he pro-
tested to the American embassy
in Jerusalem that his actions
were of a religious nature, and
did not involve politics.
Rabbi Weiswasser is planning
to leave Jerusalem on June 29,
to return home.

The Jewish National Fund
announces that it will again is-
sue tree certificates in honor
of mother on Mother's Day,
which comes this year on May
11. Certificates for trees planted
in Israel at $2 each, can now
be ordered from the ,JNF office,
UN. 4-2767 or through JNF
chairmen of affiliated organi-
zations.
In an appeal to organizations,
the JNF Council stated, "The
Jewish National Fund is again
providing one of the most digni-
fied forms of honoring mother
on her day. A growing tree is
a living tribute to every mother.
Let trees in Israel honor, or
memorialize her.
A certificate befitting the oc-
casion will be mailed to the des-
ignated person in time for Moth-
er's Day. The planting of trees,
the statement points out, also
helps in the afforestation of the
land "which is so vitally im-
portant to the reclamation of
Israel's
soil, and for the pro-
-
tection of its inhabitants.
"This is Isrears tenth year,
but these are also days of
crisis", the letter concluded.
"The long extended line of Is-
rael's frontiers leaves large
areas of the open borderland

unprotected and a temptation to
infiltrators.
"Trees and settlers can close
those borders. Planted thickly
along the most strategic sections
of the borders, trees will pro-
vide a natural bulwark of de-
fense, a barrier against attack-

on Her Day

ers and infiltrators, and a pro-
tection for the settlers."
The JNF office, 18414 Wyo-
ming, will be open from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m., May 11, for the con-
venience of those who may want
to pick up a Mother's Day Cer-
tificate on their way to a visit.
