Expect Growing Conflict
Over Sunday Closing Laws

NEW YORK (JTA)—Sunday
closing laws have become an
increasingly controversial issue
in various sections of the na-
tion during the past year, and
it is anticipated that conflicts
between religious and commer-
cial groups over Sunday laws
will grow more acute in the
future, it was indicated in a
new study issued by the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress.
The report noted that while
Sunday closing regulations have
been on the statute books of
most states and municipalities,
particularly in the East and
South, for a long time, "the past
year has seen an intensification
in the demand for new and
more res t r i c t i ve legislation.
This has been met by stiffening
resistance to such legislation by
some religious groups as well
as some commercial interests."
