Beth Aaron Religious School Slates Brunch
A special graduation brunch
will be given at 9:30 a.m.,
Sunday, at the Beth Aaron Re-
ligious School, in honor of the
35 girls Who have completed
the prescribed eight-year course
of study, including three years
of Hebrew. •
Dr. Marvin Last, chairman of
the school educational commit-
tee will preside, with the
brunch served under the di-
rection of Ben Drapkin, of the
Men's Club committee. A spe-
cial program has been pre-
pared by the graduating stu-
dents and will include the fol-
lowing: Sherry Steckler, Donna
Weingarden, Arlene Levine,
Evelyn Meral, Pamela Landis,
Helen Kaminski, Linda Weis-
man, Barbara Kosit, and Lor-
raine Saginaw.
Greetings will be extended
by the synagogue president,
Phillip Chapnick; sisterhood
president, Mrs. Jack Shenk-
man; Mens Club president, Na-
than Lax, school director, Ber-
nard Panush and by Rabbi
Benjamin H. Gorrelick, spiri-
tual leader of the Congrega-
tion.
Northern '38 Grads
Plan 20th Reunion
The 20th reunion of the
spring graduating class of 1938
from Northern High School
will be held this Saturday eve-
ning, at the United Dairy
Worker's Hall, 15840 Second,
in Highland Park.
All 1938 graduates, as well
as those from 1937 and 1939,
are invited 'to attend, according
to Joshua Gray, chairman, who
advises that a great deal of
interest has been created in
the reunion.
A beef buffet supper and
dancing to the music of Dick
Stein and his orchestra have
been planned to highlight the
evening. Tickets will be avail-
able at the door.
Dr. Hertz to Keynote
Reform Midwest Parley
Dr. Richard C. Hertz, rabbi
of Temple Beth El, Detroit, will
be keynote speaker at a ban-
quet Saturday night officially
opening the sixth biennual con-
ference of the Midwest Council
of the Union of American He-
brew Congregations.
The conference, to be held
today, Saturday and Sunday, at
Sioux City, Ia., will be attended
. by delegates from seven states,
and will discuss plans to
strengthen Reform Judaism in
the Midwest.
The graduation exercises will
be held at 10 a.m., May 18, in
the synagogue sanctuary and
will feature a cantata "The
Lights of Faith" written by
Rabbi Gorrelick, and directed
by Miss Gertrude Strauss and
class teacher Thomas Tannis.
Dr. From to Return
to Pulpit on May 9
Dr. Leon Fram will return
to the pulpit at sabbath eve
services on May 9 after flying
home directly from Israel
where he participated in the
10th anniversary celebrations
of the Jewish state.
"Israel in Its Glory" is the
subject of his sermon, the first
of a series that will extend
through May and June, in
which he will give his impres-
sions of the land and report on
leading personalities he met.
While in Israel, Dr. Frain
was a member of a group of
leaders of Liberal Judaism,
both lay and rabbinic.
Ahavas Achim School
Registration Open
Registration of students for
the coming school year will
be accepted by the Ahavas
Achim Religious School only
until May 11.
Classes, limited to 25 stu-
dents each, cover kindergarten
through 10th grade. A choice
of two schedules will be avail-
able to the students — 9 a.m.
to 11 a.m., or 11 a.m. to 1
p.m. Classes are held at the
Vernor school, Tracey and
Pembroke.

Cantor Katzman Retiring in July

Beth El announces that Dr.
Cecil Roth, famous Jewish his-
torian of England, will speak
to the Sunday Morning Break-
fast Club and Discussion Group
at 10 a.m., May 11.
His subject will be "Does
Judaism Favor Art in the Syna-
gogue?"
Dr. Roth,
born in Eng-
land and a
graduate of
Oxford U n
versity, was a
Fellow of the
Royal Histori-
cal Society of
England a n d
a member of
the Royal Dep-
utation of Na-
tional History
in Venice.
From 1936

to 1938, he
was president of the Jewish
Historical Society of England.
Since 1939, he has held the post
of reader in Jewish studies at
Oxford.
A visiting lecturer at Colum-
bia University, Dr. Roth has
also .given history courses at
the Jewish Institute of Religion
and the Menorah S u min e r
School in New York, and has
contributed articles to the En-
cyclopedia Britannica and to
leading professional and scien-
tific journals.
Dr. Roth has lectured in
many countries, and is now
visiting the United States. The
lecture is open to the public.
