All divisions of the Allied
Jewish Campaign are engaged
in a determined four-day drive
to achieve 100 per cell,. of their
1957 total by Wednesday, when
the campaign closes, reports
Max M. Fisher, campaign chair-
man.
Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, for-
mer executive vice-chairman of
the United Jewish Appeal, and
now head of the Development
Corporation for Israel, directing
the sale of Israel Bonds, will be
the principal speaker at the
closing dinner, 6 p.m., Wednes-
day, at Hotel Statler.
Before his UJA post, Dr.
Schwartz directed all Joint Dis-
tribution Committee activities
overseas and prior to that he
was director of the United Jew-
ish Charities of Brooklyn. He
speaks eloquently and with au-
thority on local, national and
overseas issues.
The arts and crafts division
of the campaign's Detroit
Service Group is currently
campaign leader with 83 per
cent of its 1957 total achieved.
Harvey Willens is arts and
crafts chairman. Pressing this
division is the food division
under the chairmanship of
Merwin K. Grosberg and Jules
Mehler. Close behind is the
professional division, whose
chairmen are Paul M. Handle-
man and Abraham Satovsky.
The mechanical trades divi-
sion, whose chairman is Robert
Trepeck, raised $1,391,367 in
the 1957 campaign and is 1958
leader in dollars pledged. The
real estate and building council,
with a $1,227,591 achievement
in 1957, is in second place un-
der the leadership of A. Alfred
Taubman.
The professional division, a
much smaller division, which
collected $762,863 in 1957, is at
this point running a surprising
third in total dollars collected.
The mercantile division, led
by Max J. Pincus and Harold A.
Robinson, and the services divi-
sion, under chairmen Sidney J.
Bertin and Maurice Sandler, are
still in contention for service
group honors.

Fisher would like to hear

Our Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, the major fund-rais-
ing activity in our commu-
nity, is scheduled to con-
clude next Wednesday, at
the annual dinner meeting
at Hotel Statler.
We join with our com-
munity's leaders in the
urgent, final hour appeal to
our workers to redouble
their efforts in behalf of
the great undertaking for
more than 50 causes that
include all our local agen-
cies and the United Jewish
Appeal, the chief support-
provider for the resettle-
ment movement in Israel;
and we plead with our peo-
ple to be more generous
than ever in their giving.
Israel'st e n t h anniver-
sary year • calls for in-
creased devotion to the
cause of an honorably re-
built homeland for the hun-
dreds of thousands of new-
corners from more than 60
countries where conditions
have become intolerable
for-Jews. The Allied Jewish
Campaign is the Number
One Instrument for such
action.
While preparing for the
final action for the drive,
we wish to join also in
welcoming to Detroit the
distinguished Jewish leader,
and eminent scholar, Dr.
Joseph J. Schwartz , - who
will be guest at the
concluding dinner next
Wednesday.
Dr. Schwartz's stature
has risen on the world
horizon during the last
three decades. He began
his career as a Federation
director, entered the over-
seas arena in behalf of the
Joint Distribution Commit-
tee, carried on its overseas
activities from his Paris of-
fice during the trying post-
war years, then returned to
this country to build up the
United Jewish Appeal, and
now is the executive vice-
president of the Israel
Bond Organization.
Thus, as the chief figure
in the Jewish reconstruc-
tion era, he has guided
American affairs in relief
and Israel reconstruction
efforts.
He is a distinguished
scholar, an ordained rabbi,
a teacher, an able lecturer,
a fine writer.
We are confident that
his message will inspire the
campaign dinner, and we
welcome him again to our
community. We pray that
the reception to him will
be in the form of a goal
accomplished — in our ef-
forts to reach and surpass
last year's Allied Jewish
Campaign total.
