JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Am-
ram Blau, Neturei Karta leader,
his son, Uri, and two other
members of the ultra-Orthodox
sect were sentenced to four
months' imprisonment on
charges of having disturbed the
peace in a violent demonstration
in February against a swimming
pool in which mixed bathing
will be permitted.
A fifth defendant was sen-
tenced to three months in jail
and a sixth to 28 days, in mag-
istrate courts, with additional
terms of three weeks for those
zealots who had been previous-
ly convicted and given sus-
pended sentences.
Eleven others received fines
ranging from 15 to 150 pounds
and ordered to sign 250-pound
bonds to guarantee good be-
havior or receive sentences of
two weeks to two months.
Three flatly refused to sign
such bonds and the other eight,
while insisting they too refused
to recognize the government of
Israel or any of its courts, en-
tered bond to avoid being in
jail during Passover.
Another trial, involving 20
others who demonstrated later
against the projected pool, will
be heard after the holiday. They
include three yeshiva students
from abroad who have been free
on bail.

Yiddish Flourishes in Birobidjan, Soviet Foreign Services Report

LONDON (WJA)—A number
of English-language transmis-
sions of the official Soviet
News Agency Tass and foreign
language broadcasts from Mos-
cow radio in the second half
of March were devoted to de-
tailed descriptions of Jewish
life in the Jewish Autonomous
Oblast—Birobidjan, reports the
World Jewish Congress Infor-
mation Department.
Solomon Kadiner, deputy
chairman of the Oblast Execu-
tive Committee, was quoted in
Hungarian and Spanish broad-
casts as having said that in
addition to Russian, Yiddish
was also an official language in
Birobidjan.

He claimed that all - docu-
ments of the executive com-
mittee were published in both
languages, one of the two
Oblast newspapers was pub-
lished in Yiddish and the local
radio station broadcast in Yid-
dish.
"Jews, Russians and Ukrain-
ians live and work like mem-
bers of one large family in
every village and town of the
Oblast, where they were jointly
settled, and whose wild but
rich soil they have reclaimed.
Now they jointly enjoy the
fruits of their work."
A description of life in Biro-
bidjan by Vera Gleizer, candi-
date for the Soviet of Nationali-

ties; was transmitted in the
English-language Tass service
during the elections. The agen-
cy report, describing Miss
Gleizer as a teacher, quoted
her as having said that Birobid-
jan had a regional library with
more than 100,000 volumes, in-
cluding more than 10,000 in
Hebrew and Yiddish.
There were two regional
newspapers—in Yiddish and in
Russian. Altogether, seven
newspapers were published in
Birobidjan. The Jewish Auton-
omous Oblast had an area of
36,000 square kilometers and a
population of more than 180,-
000. It was now both an' indus-
trial and an agricultural area,

she said.
Describing educational facil-
ities, Miss Gleizer, according to
the Tass report, said that Biro-
bidjan now had 12 secondary
schools, a boarding-school, two
workers' evening schools and a
music school. A teachers' train-
ing college had trained more
than 2,000 teachers in a quarter
of a century. Many young peo-
ple had been trained at the
specialized medical high school
and the school of agricultural
mechanization.
Another English-language
Tass transmission listed works
of Soviet Jewish writers now
being published in the RusSian
language.

Neturei Karta Fanatics
Can't Stand Amnesty

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Ten
additional members of ultra-
Orthodox Neturei Karta sect
were detained by police in a
demonstration which grew out
of, the Israeli authorities releas-
ing leaders of the sect from
jail for the Passover holiday.
On the recommendation of
Premier - D avid Ben-Gurion,
Rabbi Amram Blau and 16 of
his supporters who had been
convicted of disturbing the
peace in connection with pro-
tests against the building of
a pool for mixed bathing in
Jerusalem were paroled from
jail for the holidays.
However, since the regula-
tions provide that a prisoner
may • be paroled for only 48
hours at a time, the Neturei
Karta • leaders were required to
return for a brief period of
detention before being paroled
again.
The return was converted
into a new demonstration when
supporters of Rabbi Blau raised
him on their shoulders and
carried him through Jeru-
salem's streets to the police
Station.
By the time they reached
Jaffa Road, the city's main
thoroughfare, they had attracted
a. crowd which several times
blocked traffic. - Attempting to
disperse the crowd, the police
met with resistance from
Neturei Karta members arid
detained ten.
