B - G Criticizes New Israel Literature

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Modern
Hebrew literature is "detached
from the urgent problems of
the State of Israel„" Prime
Minister David Ben-Gurion de-
clared in a letter to the Israeli
Writers Conference which con-
vened at the new Israeli Writ-
ers House here, named after the
late, famous poet, Saul Tcherni-
chovsky.
Modern literature in this
country, Ben-Gurion wrote, "has
not echoed the revolutionary
and fateful event of the ingath-
ering of a million Jews." The
Premier told the writers he
would not "dare" tell them what
their intellectual contribution
should be, but he would "allow"
himself to present the question
as to whether modern literature

10,000 Irgunists
Celebrate Liberation
at Jaffa Rally

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Irgun, pre-Israel's national mil-
itary underground organization,
many of whose members were
condemned to death by the
British over 10 years ago,
marched on the main road be-
tween Jaffa and this .city, corn-
memorating the tenth anniver-
sary of Irgun's liberation of
Jaffa.
Led by their commander of
10 years ago, Menachem Beigin,
the Irgun men-10,000 strong—
participated in a mass rally
addressed by Beigin. In his ad-
dress, Beigin declared that the
independence of Israel was
achieved through the sacrifices
made by Israeli fighters and
not by resolutions adopted "by
foreign bodies."
Jacques Soustelles, a member
of the Frech parliament visiting
here, and a former French re-
sistance fighter, told the rally
that "the Israel underground,
like the French, fought against
cruel enemies and won because
they believed in freedom and
independence."
Tel Aviv Mayor Chaim Lev-
anon also addressed the Irgun-
ists, stating that it was the
youth of the Jewish under-
ground that had been responsi-
ble for the liberation of Jaffa.
After the mass rally, a special
meeting of Irgunists was held at
Jaffa, where the celebration was
continued late into the night.
