Former Detroiter
Wins Play Contest

Hindi Brooks, formerly of
Detroit, was the winner of a
first-prize award of $350 in a
national playwright c o n t e s t
sponsored by the Jewish Cen-
ters Association of Los Angeles.
Her play, "The Candyman,"
is a one-acter set against a
background of anti-Semitism
and it is expected to be pro-
duced shortly.
Miss Brooks is the profes-
sional name used by Mrs. Men-
del Klein, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Bookstein, of
16851 Biltmore. She attended
Central High School where she
worked on the Centralite and
Wayne University where she
was on the staff of the Col-
legian. "Illustrious Uncle," an-
other play by Miss Brooks was
produced several years ago and
was quite popular at that time.
Hindi has been a resident
of Los Angeles for ten years
and her husband will be teach-
ing high school dramatics in
L. A. in the fall.
