Louis Berry succeeded Hyman
Safran as president of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, following the
97th annual meeting of the con-
gregation, which took place last
night.
Berry headed the following
slate which was selected by the

Miro, treasurer; and Abraham
Satovsky, secretary.
Nominated for re-election to
the board of trustees were Sam-
uel Benavie, Nathan Fishman,
Jack C. Gordon, Joseph H.
Jackier, Louis H. Luckoff and
Leo Weiner.
The nominating committee,
headed by Judge Charles Rub-
iner, chairman, included Dr.
Max Lichter, Arthur S. Purdy,
Samuel Shetzer, Dr. Leonard
Sidlow and Louis J. Tobin.

Garson Kanin is currently
preparing his first directorial
assignment in Hollywood since
war's end, the filming of "Devil
May Care," based on his own
original story.

today. At 8:30 p.m. sabbath services today, Rabbi M. Robert
Syme will preach on "The Song of Songs." The Bar Mitzvah
of Lee Warren Weisenthal will be observed. At 11 a.m.
services Saturday, the Bar Mitzvah of Robert Paul Moss
will be observed.
BETH AARON SYNAGOGUE: Services of conclusion for Pass-
over will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 6:45 p.m., today and Sat-
urday. Rabbi Benjamin H. Gorrelick will preach the sermons,
and Cantor Ihil Gilden will chant the liturgy. Yizkor serv-

CONG. BNAI DAVID: Services at the new and old synagogues
will be identical: 6:45 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. today and Satur-
day. Rabbi Hayim Donin will preach, and Cantor Hyman J.
Adler and the Bnai David Choir will chant the services.
Yizkor memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday.
ADAS SHALOM SYNAGOGUE: Passover concluding services at
8:30 a.m., today and Saturday, and at 6 p.m., today. Yizkor
prayers at 10:30 a.m., Saturday. Rabbi Jacob E. Segal will
preach the sermon on Saturday on "The Memory That
Creates." Cantor Nicholas Fenakel_ and the choir, conducted
by Abe Silver, will officiate.
CONG. BETH JOSEPH: Sabbath services at 6:45 p.m., today,
and at 9 a.m., Saturday.
YOUNG ISRAEL OF NORTHWEST DETROIT: Services of con-
clusion will be at 9 a.m. and 6:50 p.m., today and Saturday,
with Yizkor services Saturday at 10:45 a.m. Dr. Leo Y.
'Goldman will preach the sermons on "Counting Days," and
"Remember Yourself."
TEMPLE BETH EL: Yizkor memorial services, concluding Pass-
over will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, when Rabbi David A.
Baylinson preaches on "The Burdens of Life." Services in
celebration of the fifth anniversary of the ministry of Dr.
Richard C. Hertz will be held at 8:30 p.m., today, when
Dr. Bertram W. Korn, rabbi of Cong. Keneseth Israel, Phila-
delphia, will be the speaker. A reception for Dr. and Mrs.
Hertz will follow the services. At 11:15 a.m. services Satur-
day, Rabbi Baylinson will preach on "The Song of Moses."
CONG. AHAVAS ACHIM: Services at 6:30 p.m., today. At 8:45
a.m., services Saturday, Rabbi Jacob Chinitz will preach on
"The Slippery Path of Religion."
BETH ABRAHAM SYNAGOGUE: Services for the concluding
days of Passover will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 6:45 p.m., to-
day and Saturday. Rabbi Israel I. Halpern will preach, and
Cantor Shabtai Ackerman and the synagogue choir, led by
Israel Fuchs, will chant the services.
EVERGREEN JEWISH CONG.: Services will be held at 8:45
p.m., today, in the home of Dr. and Mrs. David I. Silver,
20078 Kentfield. Passover Yizkor services are scheduled
for 9 a.m., Saturday, at Mettetal School, Edinborough at
Vasser. Rabbi Herbert S. Eskin will officiate.
CONG. SHAAREY ZEDEK: Passover services of conclusion will
be held at 8:45 a.m. and 6 p.m., today, and at 8:45 a.m.,
Saturday. Rabbi Morris Adler will speak on "Slaves Without
Masters" and "The Time of Your Life." Cantors Jacob H.
Sonenklar and Reuven Frankel will officiate.
YOUNG ISRAEL OF DETROIT: Passover concluding services
will be held at 9 a.m. and 6:55 p.m., today and Saturday,
with Yizkor services Saturday set for 11 a.m. Rabbi Isaac
Stollman, national president of the United Religious Zion-
ists of America, will be guest speaker at services today.
Rabbi Samuel H. Prero will preach at Yizkor services.

at Adas Shalom

A joint committee of leaders
from Beth Abraham Synagogue,
the United Religious Zionists
and Detroit Friends for Bar-
Ilan University met this week
to formalize plans for a me-
morial meeting honoring the
late Abraham Nusbaum.
Mr. Nusbaum, a long-time
participant in the activities of
all three organizations, died last
month after a long illness.
The memorial tribute is
planned for 8:30 p.m., April 22,
in the Beth Abraham sanctuary.
Rabbi Israel I. Halpern and
Cantor Shabtai Ackerman will
officiate.
Other local and national lead-
ers are expected to participate
in paying tribute to Mr. Nus-
baum's memory.

TEMPLE

Noted newspaper column-
ist DREW PEARSON, who re-
cently returned from Israel
and other states in the Middle
East, will speak at a pro-
gram of the Adas Shalom
Men's Club, in celebration of
Israel's 10th anniversary of
independence. The address
will be given on April 21, in
the synagogue. Also in atten-
dance will be Gov. G. Mennen
Williams and Mayor Louis C.
Miriani. Pearson will be intro-
duced by Rabbi Jacob E.
Segal.

Dr. Edgar G. Johnston, pro-
fessor of education, has been
appointed Franklin Memorial
Professor in Human Relations
for 1959 at Wayne State Uni-
versity.
He was selected by University
President Clarence B. Hilberry
on the basis of recommenda-
tions by a faculty committee.
The Memorial Professor is cho-
sen each year for his contribu-
tions to the field of human rela-
tions.
Dr. Johnston will chair the
university's annual series of
Franklin Memorial Lectures,
which was established in 1949
by the board of trustees of
Temple Beth El and the De-
troit Board of Education in
honor of the late Dr. Leo M.
Franklin, rabbi of the Temple
for 42 years.
Dr. Johnston has served edu-
cation in numerous offices at
state and national levels, in-
cluding the secretaryships of
the commission on secondary
schools and the North Central

1958-59 president of the Michi-
gan Association for Higher Edu-
cation.
He has also been active in
the whole area of civil rights,
serving as chairman of Wayne
State's Summer Workshop in
Human Relations in 1951 and
1954, and as a member of sev-
eral governmental commissions.

Hebrew Schools to Give
Jerusalem Examination

The 10th annual Jerusalem
Examinations to test proficiency
in Hebrew language, Bible and
Mishnah will be given on April
20, in Detroit by the United
Hebrew Schools.
Prepared by the Hebrew Uni-
versity in Jerusalem and admin-
istered in many countries
throughout the world, he ex-
aminations are open to Hebrew
teachers, students and laymen of
all ages, and confer upon suc-
cesful candidates the title of
"Amit" or fellow.
Certificate holders planning to
to enroll at the university
are exempted from entrance ex-
amination in the Hebrew lan-
guage which is otherwise obli-
gatory for students from abroad.
Fellows also receive priority in
applying for membership in
Israel seminars sponsored by
the Jewish Agency.

Rabbi Rosenbaum to Speak
on Howard Fast's New Book

Rabbi Milton Rosenbaum will
speak on " 'The Naked God' by
Howard Fast" at the sabbath
service of Temple Emanu-El at
5:15 p.m. today.
Participating in the service
will be Mrs. Richard Orloff,
Louis Goldstein, Dr. I. D. Fagin,
Bernard Grant and Richard
Orloff. An oneg shabbat will
take place after the service.
