Siyum for First Born to Usher in
Eight-Day Holiday Season Today
The season of Passover, one
of the most celebrated of Jew-
ish festivals, will commence at
sundown tonight with services
in our synagogues, followed by
the traditional home sedorim.
The holiday will continue for
eight days, the first two—this
Saturday and Sunday—and the
final two—commencing with
sundown Thursday, to be
marked by synagogue services.
As a prelude to the start of
the festival, many synagogues
will hold special Siyum b'Cho-

Following is a listing of syna-
gogues and the services and
activitties they have planned
during the Passover season:
Adas Shalom Synagogue
Services of worship will be
held at 6 p.m., today, and at
8:30 a.m., Saturday and Sunday.
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal will
preach the sermon on Satur-
day on the subject "The Re-
wards and Penalties of Free-
dom." Cantor Nicholas Fenakel
and the choir, directed by Abe
Silver, will chant the service.
The services on Sunday will
be conducted entirely by mem-
bers of the Junior Congrega-
tion, with the teen-agers parti-
cipating in the readings from
the Torah and the Haftorah,
reciting special prayers and
leading responsive reading.
The Shacharis and Halel serv-
ice will be chanted by Paul
Stern, and Jonathan Toby Se-
gal will serve as cantor for
Musaf. Brief sermons will be
delivered by Leon Waldman
and Barbara Goldsmith.
Concluding services will be
at 6 p.m., Thursday and Fri-
day, April 10 and 11, and at
8:30 a.m., April 11 and 12. Yiz-
kor prayers will be recited the
latter day at 10:30 a.m.
Cong. Ahavas Achim
All Passover evening services
will begin at 6:30 p.m., and
morning services are scheduled
for 8:45 a.m., Saturday and
Sunday. Rabbi Jacob Chinitz
will preach on "Being Alive
at the Deadline" and "Is God
a Member of Your Family?"
Cantor Jacob Tambor will
officiate at the services, and
Mordecai Elk will serve as
Torah reader.
Concluding day services will
use the same time table, with
Rabbi Chinitz speaking on "The
Slippery Path of Religion" and
"Creative Catastrophe." Yizkor
services April 12 are at 10:30
a.m.
Cong. Bnai Moshe
Siyum b'Chorim services will
begin at 7:15 a.m., today, and
evening services start at 6:30
p.m. Passover morning services
will be held at 8:45 a.m.
Rabbi Moses Lehrman will
speak both days on the subjects
"Where Security Lies" and
"Answers to the Unanswerable."

the congregation will be in-
stalled by Rabbi Lehrman.
For the concluding days, eve-
ning services begin at 6:45 p.m.
and morning services at 8:45
a.m. Rabbi Lehrman will preach
the sermons on "There Are No
Substitutes" and "When We
Are Not Alone," the latter at
Yizkor services, which begin
at 8:30 a.m.
Temple Israel
Regular late services today
will not be held because of
the first seder; however, there
will be an early service at 5:45
p.m.
At Passover morning services
at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Dr.
Leon Fram will deliver the last
sermon before his trip to Is-
rael. He will preach on "Faith
Means Freedom."
The annual congregational
seder will be held Saturday
evening, in the Leon Fram
Hall, when Dr. Fram, Rabbi
M. Robert Syme and the Tem-
ple Israel Quartet, directed by
Karl Haas, will participate.
Seder arrangements were
made by a committee headed
by Hyman M. Jackson.
Yizkor memorial services will
be held at 10:30 a.m., April
11, when Rabbi Syme will de-
liver - the sermon.

Passover services will be

Southfield, at 6:45 p.m., today,
and at 8:30 a.m., Saturday and

will preach the sermons on
"Freedom in Personal Living"

All But Canceled
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Amer-
ican Jewish publishing houses
were informed by the United
States Information Agency that
the export of books from this
country to Israel under the In-
formation Media Guaranteeing
arrangement between the two
governments would be limited
primarily to books and publica-
tions of a scientific nature.
The new ruling adversely af-
fects the shipment of Yiddish
and Hebrew books published in
this country to Israel under the
IMG arrangement.
The American-Israel -under-
standing provides that books
and publications from the U.S.
would be sold in Israel for local
currency, which is deposited to
the account of the American
Embassy in Israel, while its eq-
uivalent in dollars is paid by the
U.S. Government to the Amer-
ican publishers and book deal-
ers.
Most Jewish books sent from
this country to Israel do not
fall into the category of scien-
tific publications.
