Entertaining, Instructive
Reading for Youngsters
In Three New Books

Children are lucky these
days. Writers with imagination
and artists with skills are pre-
paring wholesome books for
them and thereby provide them
with instructively entertaining
reading.
A typical example is "The
Upside-Down Boy." The Young-
sters who are imaginative, who
dream of walking on the ceil-
ing, turn into the upside-down
creatures and imagine with
John what tricks an Upside-
Down Boy can perform. This
Viking Press Book is by Doro-
thy Ivens, who also drew the
attractive pictures.
Since all children are imagi-
native, this book will enlarge
the dreams of youngsters. Per-
haps they'll dream, like John,
and they certainly will enjoy
with him the adventure of this
fine story.
Viking Press has provided
for young readers another
charming book with pictures,
both by Zhneya Gay, in "Bits
and Pieces. In verses and sto-
ries, this able writer has pieced
together stories about many
animals, about boys and girls,
and has blended them into a
tale that is sure to hold the
child's attention.
Then there is the Viking
book for 10-to-15-year-old chil-
dren, "Robin Is a Bear," by
- Jeffrey Potter, with illustra-
tions by Johannes Troyer. This,
too, is a very imaginative and
therefore a very exciting story.
These three books are highly
recommendable for young
readers.

The Flora and Fauna of Israel • . .

"A land of wheat and barley
and vines and fig trees and
pomegranates, a land of olive oil
and honey," says the Bible. In
the course of time, many other
types of. growing things bene-
ficial to mankind must be added
to the list. These would include
date-palms, bananas, and of
course the orange and other
citrus fruits, for which the
coastal plain, when irrigated,
offers the world's most favor-
able combination of soil and
sunshine.
Deciduous fruit trees grow
everywhere, but especially in
the cool mountainous areas; ba-
nanas, avocados, guavas, man-
goes in the hot Jordan Valley
and ill the coastal plain. In addi-
tion to the basic grains, tobacco
and flax are grown, while
groundnuts (peanuts) and sugar
beet have been successfully in-
troduced on a large scale during
the last few years.
Indigenous trees in Israel are
relatively few; there is the tam-

arisk in the less dry parts of
the South and along the coast;
the carob-tree, whose fruit, used
as a measure, may have been
the origin of the word "carat";
and the holm-oak, a low but
sturdy mountain tree. Within
the past century settlers have
introduced the eucalyptus to
help drain the swamps; more
recently pine forests have been
planted in the mountains and
acacia trees on duneland.
The country is rich in medici-
nal herbs and wild flowers. As
early as December, even in the
mountains, narcissus and hya-
cinth are followed by anemones,
cyclamen, crocus, daisies and
many, many more. The fruit
trees are already in bloom in
January, and from that time
until April, the slopes of Mount
Carmel and the range of hills
nearby slopes are a sea of color
and perfume.
The cactus, that is the famous

tive-born Israeli, was introduced
only some eighty years ago;
small boys and well-g loved
street vendors sell its sweetish
and refreshing fruit in the sum-
mer months.
The Asian elephant and the
Mesopotamian hippopotamus
were known in these regions in
historic times. Lions, leopards,
and the silvery Syrian bears
were still to be found even at
the beginning of this century.
These are now extinct, although
the famed Biblical Zoo in Jeru-
salem has succeeded in breed-
ing Syrian bears. Hyenas and
jackals, however, are still nu-
merous; sometimes an occa-
sional hard winter may drive
wolves or leopards from Leba-
non to Galilee; wildcats, lynxes,
otters, the mongoose and the
spotted weasel are the main
beasts of prey.
Gazelles were almost all killed
off, but under protection today,
have increased substantially.
Porcupines are plentiful.
